AC 65 oil filler cap
« on: February 21, 2016, 06:44:42 PM »

within in past several days, I thought there was a discussion on a AC 65 oil filler cap with pictures. If so, I am unable to find it. Would like to see the pictures again. In going a box of STUFF I found one and want to compare it to the picture shown.  It may have been on another site, if so if anyone has seen it let me know.

There was a discussion on V8Buick.
The oil fill cap in question was this one on eBay offered by Inline Tube.
Jason, JZRiv, said it was correct for the Buick aluminum valve covers.

The replacement version had a different pn and had a rivet in the center.

That would be correct for a closed emissions system.  Not all '65 s had a closed system, often referred to as California emissions.
A non closed, or open system had a breather style cap.

Ok, for some reason I keep thinking I'm on www.66GS.com:drunken_smilie:

....65's have a different aluminum valve cover. '66 had a chrome oil fil cap AND a chrome push-in breather.

Loren, did the '65 also have the push-in breather or was it a twist on?

It's all good, no one upset on this end.

The breather on '65s was in the front of the left valve cover. It was a twist on style.
For the open emission system, it is a "can" with a filter material inside.
On a vehicle with a closed emissions system, at the front of the left valve cover, there would be a breather and at the top of the breather is a hose that goes to the air cleaner.
I think that is the same as what you are describing, Walt.

Loren,
Just want to clarify what you said above about the breather being in the middle of the drivers side valve cover on a 65.  I thought it was at the front?  Pictures I have of your 65 and others (including mine) that have aluminum valve covers without the CCV system all have the oil filler/breather at the very front of the cover and no hole in the middle of the cover.

I am going by my old memory, and I think you are correct. I may be mixing up the steel  vs aluminum covers in my memory.

Thanks for the catch, Brian

I'll modify that post

Cal. emissions type. There are two hose lengths depending on which style, there were two.
See Dan's engine for the other type. Aluminum covers would need to be the same as there
weren't separate/different breather hoses for those - except Riv 2x4.

I always enjoy a good discussion about the details on our cars, whether it be for a 65 or a 66!
I didn't realize the 65-earlier aluminum valve covers used a twist-on breather until now! They are avail as a repo.
The '66 push-in are not repo'd yet, but sometimes show up on eBay for outrageous prices ($200 range)... they were also use on some hi-po Chevy's like the 427 so they are in demand.

Back to the first post..... Glen, are you talking about a oil filler cap or a breather? Chrome or painted?

The post I was asking about was about a chrome oil filler cap that was posted on v8buick. After viewing the post I remembered that I had one in a box of old 69 chevelle  parts. (sorry for using the c word) The post showed several pictures and talked about the location of AC-65 stamping on the cap. I was interested in comparing the photos with the one i have. The cap was used on the 396 engines and 442's also had the same cap.
The prices that were quoted drew my as attention as I was getting ready to round up some 65 GS, 68 GS and a few other things to take to a swap meet in April.

Oh, that thread!
Here's one of them:
http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?303745-Chrome-AC-FC-65-Oil-Cap&s=f688ab1a3a9db4bc45ec4de36b4c616f

It's also avail as a repo, about $35. Repo has some very minor differences.... orientation of the lettering to the hand holds.

If you want to search something on V8Buick, go to the prototype site at www.V8Buick.net
It has a search engine that actually works!

All

Found search in 65GS.com under Oil cap.

Sept 10, 2011 nailhead

Mark and I have pictures comparing our oil fill caps for California chrome beauty kits with the ones Ames was selling. Looked good but AC stamp 90degree off rotation. I have the short hose version of the California chrome beauty kit.
