The Storm of January 2016

Even though things are quiet weather-wise in the upper midwest, I was caught up in the storm happening now on the east coast.
I had a family emergency in NC, where most of my wife's family resides. I left Wednesday for eastern NC, planning to come back
this afternoon from Raleigh. Yesterday morning, all flights for Southwest were cancelled from RDU until Monday. Melissa & I spent
several hours checking into flights from other airports as well as the possibility of just renting a car and driving all the way back to MN.

The weather looked grim if driving east or northeast from there. Finally decided to try a flight out of Charleston, SC for this morning.
Rented a car in Rocky Mount, NC, and hit the road for Charleston. Made it there with no issues, except one ice covered tree that fell
and blocked southbound 95 around Fayetteville. Got home this morning before noon.

I have brother in law in Clifton, VA who guessed he had more than 3ft of snow (DC area). I know Brian Stone and Walt are in the path
of this storm. How are things out there?

. . . Never mind all that white stuff!  Out there in the west we are desperate for the wet stuff!!

I'm not sure how El Niño effects the rest of the country, but here in California we have been hoping that we could get rains sufficient to break the horrible drought we've been having.  We are definitely not out of the woods but January is over 40% above normal rainfall and we are looking at the first time this rainy season to be above normal for an average season.  So if you got too much snow - ship it back to California!  We'll take it! 

Seriously, sorry if you guys are having such a hard time on the east coast and glad Mark you and your wife managed to escape the white-out.  El Niño might be contributing to your miseries, but out here in California we are so desperate that we are courting serious flooding just to break this nasty drought.

I'm north of Phila, Pa. I made out fine. It was a good snow, cold and light. Got windy at times an it kept the accumulations off of my garage roof.
The power never went out, and even my Dish satellite TV had a good signal all day.
I figure we got somewhere around 2 ft of snow.
Cleaned my 600 ft driveway during the afternoon, and I'll do it again tomorrow. Hope to put my xc skis on and get some pics tomorrow.

LOTS of snow, but overall we are fortunate. The NJ coast had to deal with flooding and the states to the south had devastating ice to deal with.

Had about 4 or 5" of snow here in Mocksville with a lot of sleet mixed in.  Very heavy stuff to shovel!   None of it fell liquid though, so nothing on the trees or power lines like they got over in the Eastern part of the state where Mark was.  Supposed to get up into the low 40s mid-day today, so should be melting some.  I will get out and shovel the other half of the driveway once the temp gets up and loosens everything up.

We got about 12" here in the Poconos. Walt is probably an hour south of us. There was 18" 1/2 hour north of us and two feet 1/2 hour south. Four hours of shoveling, snow blowing and plowing has it pretty well managed here. It also shrunk back with the temps above freezing today.

Round #2 of cleanup today. Official reports vary from 23" to 30" in the area. Most of what I dealt with in the driveway was 20" or so. It's a stone drive so I don't take it all the way to the surface.... the snowthrower doesn't like rocks!

Happy to see you all are doing fine. 

Looks like you have the right equipment for the job Walt. Certainly aren't going to do it with a shovel. LOL  I have a 1/4 mi drive before the county road.
We haven't had but 1" this year, so the tractor and Bobcat haven't been out of the shed.
