It's been looked at by a couple of forum members before. It had previously sat outside a body shop, if I recall correctly, in Des Moines.

It needed a frame at that time, and that was a few years ago. Party who had it was asking too much then at about half of the asking price now.

Must be like a vintage wine, gets more valuable with time. LOL

Correct. Rob & I looked at it in 2012 or 13. I have tons of pictures of this car. Unlike some wine, it looks as though it has not improved with age. The ad states that it runs but my recollection was that it was non running. A list of what this car doesn't need would fit on a sticky note.

Correction - we looked at it in 2011. Jim, cowl tag pic attached.

Based on our examination of the car, it appeared to be a real deal 65 gs 3spd convertible.  It had the proper carburetor and even protect-o-plate.  The owner (then) was the original buyer.  If I recall correctly he had ordered a 4spd skylark late in the year and they upgraded him to a GS but with only a 3spd.   rare car.  The order form which I reviewed was for a skylark but the engine matched the vin so It seemed numbers matching to us.   I would be interested in knowing if the original buyer is the seller now because this price is much higher than our last quote.

The frame, quarters, fenders, floor, trunk floor, trunk lid and hood were all rusted through at various spots.  The frame seemed rusted through on both sides.  Every body part was rusted.

Despite the above, this car is a really great (rare) color and has some tough stuff to find, like the order form, protect-o-plate, and 3922 carb, numbers matching engine, correct rally wheels and the 3spd.  It would be awesome restored and Mark and i almost talked ourselves into the project in the past (albeit for a much lower purchase price).  I hope someone restores it because it would probably be one of a kind car with this combination of color, top and drive train.

It would be a cool car but unless you could do most of the work yourself it looks like it could really eat money.

If you want to work that hard Jim,you can come over and finish mine....lol. That is a dern shame that he wants so much for it. I could see it being worth doing at a realistic price, but "restorable" and parts car are usually two different topics. If I was selling it I would give the buyer something to consider like maybe making it run and drive or something that would be a positive other than the rarity. Definitely not many ever made.

I,m tempted to go look at that car at the end of this month when I go to a swap meet in Des Moines , but he,s asking at least double what I would consider paying .

It's shocking what he's asking. If it didn't need a frame that's a 4500 car.

Unfortunately, unless the seller comes to his senses, it probably means that a unique classic will sit rotting for a number of more years.  It's sad for the car, but it's his call.  And it's not THAT unique......

Apparently, the seller isn't capable of doing or accepting a solid competitive price analysis!   :BangHead:

I guess I have to consider the rust free red four speed convertible that recently sold on eBay for around 20k. If someone GAVE you this three speed car and 20K......you still would not be able to make it as nice as the red car. I do not see it being worth more than the sum of the original parts. I really would like to see it brought back to life, but a guy has to have some sense.

Car is back on CL Des Moines for $8K. Still $5K too much in my opinion.
Positive on this car: still has complete original drivetrain: great color combo: convertible.
Almost a no-option car.
