Correct cotter pins for 65/6 front suspension
« on: August 09, 2015, 12:54:23 PM »
What is the correct cotter pins for 65/6 front suspension? Steel or copper, if copper where to purchase them. I think I am getting carried away on this project but it is kinda fun, thanks Bill.

Not sure what is correct, but I bought a copper set from Duane Heckman off the V8Buick board.

I'm watching to see if anybody requests a tank of air from Fremont California to finish the restoration on their Fremont built car.  :)

You have some? I need some 'correct' air for my spare tire.

And those cotter pins.... make sure you bend them the correct way.

It just so happens, I just came back from Fremont CA. with 6000 gallons of air in my tanker. I can put it in a balloon and write your name on it, but have to check the wind direction before sending.     Bill

Dear GranSportSedan, Walt, Bill, and mid-60s Buick originality freaks, . . . .  :laughing7:

. . . . Now look, you call 2015 Fremont air original?  It has utterly different pollutants!  Not enough lead, too many particulates from China, the aroma of gourmet coffee and croissant instead of rot-gut coffee and greasy doughnuts . . . . .

If you want really authentic air, you'll need to consult the Greenland ice cores and see what 1965 air was really like!

Guys, thanks for all the info and comments, yes I am getting a little overboard, but do an advanced search on "cotter pins" on V8 Buick and you will find it interesting. Copper was used on 70/72 center link assemblies and they even address the bending them. 68/9 cars used steel and no info on 64/7 that I could find. Per Duane, they do take points of like at BCA National events. Thanks Bill.

Bill ,
Nothing wrong with trying to make it as correct as possible . Its one of the reasons I,m here asking so many questions .
Even though my car won,t be numbers matching I,m gonna try and make it as correct as possible .
( well except for a few modern chassis up dates )
Cant wait to see your car Bill !!!

There is actually a little illness in everyone.....lol...This is a funny post because I was just going to ask if there is a "correct " spring as far as length or color for the throttle return, but I was afraid you guys would all rag on me.

You had to mention it... Yes there is a correct spring, and color. I don't have the size, etc for ithe spring, but the color that was closest I could find is Rustoleum gloss warm yellow: 249091.
It would be great if someone has found a close replacement and could post a source.

Does anyone want to discuss the spare tire cover and what color to paint it? Lol.

Thank you for posting that pic....I have a box of "stuff" that was originally in the trunk and I think I actually have the right one. There are several springs here and I also would like to know how or where the clutch return spring would be. It has the torsion spring inside the bellhousing, but is there also a correct mounting on the exterior linkage? I want to stay as close to right as possible, but I did not buy T3 headlights because I already had nos Westinghouse bulbs from another project...... I am still not sure about the tire air,but I do have the original spare and I think the air is legit. Now ,if I can just find an nos clip to hold on the right rear window crank.....or a can of "Buick" window cleaner so I don't leave any evidence of windex or other contaminants.
