Oil and dipstick question
« on: June 26, 2015, 10:30:25 PM »
Been slowly working on minor repairs and service on Steve Shuman's red convertible before taking a "Maiden Voyage" here in Michigan.  Replaced the washer reservoir that was cracked/broken and the hose to the pump.  Found that there was no hold down on the battery, so installed a repop from Fusick that I had bought for my 4-speed car that is now in restoration.  Then figured I'd change the oil. Pulled the dipstick and it read WAY over full.  The oil looked brand new, and should have since the car has hardly been driven since it was changed a year and a half ago.  I decided to change it anyway so that I could be sure it has the proper amount of oil in it.  Before doing that, just for kicks I pulled the dipstick out of my 4-speed engine and was surprised to find it was shorter and an entirely different part number.  And when I checked the oil in Steve's car with the other dipstick, it read right around full.  Checked the Master Parts Catalog and here's what I found:

Steve's car's dipstick is PN 1372785 which the parts catalog says is for "65-66 400 eng."

4-speed car's dipstick is PN 1356562 which the parts catalog says is for "64-66 401-425 eng."

I know that the 401 was referred to as a 400 for marketing purposes back in the day and I'm quite sure Buick didn't make their 400 engine until about 1967.  So I can't figure out what the difference would be in these two engine references.  Now, to make matters worse, now that I have put 4.5 quarts of new oil in Steve's car, its dipstick reads just a shade over full and the dipstick from the 4-speed car reads about a quart low.  I guess this confirms that Steve's car was overfilled at its last oil change, but I still don't understand the different parts in the same year engine.  Any thoughts?

That aside, I did take Steve's car out for a ride to the local ice cream parlor.  Got a big rattle in the driver's door, but it runs really well, especially considering it has over 104K miles on the engine.   :icon_thumright:

Thanks,

Chuck

Thanks Mark.  Good to know I have the right one in Steve's car.  After thinking about this, I'm wondering if the 400 engine designation (and its dipstick) is exclusively for the 401 in the GS and the 401-425 designation is for the nailhead in other Buick models.  Doesn't the GS have a different oil pan than the other models?  If so, that could explain the difference in dipsticks.

Chuck,

65-66 GS has its own pan & stick. The pan has a rear sump to clear the crossmember.
Most other nail heads in big car & Riviera 401/425 had a center sump.
Hope that helps.

Chuck,

I have a similar issue with my dipstick.   I changed my oil out of necessity right before the nationals as I had to loosen the oil pan.  I put just four quarts in (I did not remove oil filter) and checked the oil to see how much more i needed and my stick also read "way over".  I wonder if someone could measure a correct stick from the cork (stopper) to the tip.  That would let me know if my stick is simply wrong and could set a standard for this issue.  A measurement from the stopper to the correct level would also be helpful.   Russ Martin sells sticks for nail heads and that may be a solution for us both.

GS stick is longer due to deep pan

Robk ask a question on the correct oil level marking on the dipstick for a rear sump pan. I have a center sump stick in a rear sump engine and would like to know the correct level from the stopper.

My oil level is an inch over the full mark, with 5 quarts of oil and new filter.

Is the inch over full before or after you started the engine after changing the oil.

The inch over full is after the engine has been running. I have since been told, that it should only have 4.5 quarts of oil total, with filter. Sorry Bill

Okay, I am now in the middle of this oil level dip stick debacle.  I need to check which one I have, but lets talk generically about oil capacity.

I have read several documents that indicate 4 plus .9 in the filter.  I have also read a few that indicate the system capacity, in total, is 4 quarts.  And that the filter holds .9.

Which is it?  4 or 4.9?  Oddly enough, I believe 4 would line right up with the full line on the dipstick I have (which I am not sure is correct yet).

As a side note, I really like the Gibbs oil.  Good stuff......

Thanks,

According to the '65 Gran Sport Service manual under maintenance, page 1-2, figure1-1 a completely dry system takes 5 quarts.

Dry system means a new dry filter.
