Richard, Those numbers do not look familiar to me.
Are they stamped on, or part of the casting?
Distributor is in the back on Nailheads, in the front on the other Buick V-8's.
There is a casting number on the back of the block near the base of the distributor. Or list the casting number off of one of the heads or the intake manifold....that will narrow down the year of the engine.
There is a casting number chart on Buicks.net:
http://www.teambuick.com/forums/view.php?pg=casting_numbers_nailhead

Edit: Sorry, it appears you have to log into Team Buick before you can view that link. This link will take you to the reference page where the casting number ID is:
http://www.teambuick.com/index.php?page=reference
You will have to sign in to Team Buick to see the info!

Richard, it looks like you need to log into Team Buick to see the link I posted.
But the 1196914 heads were used from 59-66, so that doesn't help much.

If you log into the Team Buick site, go to the reference page, then to the '425 Identification' page....there is a pic there of where the ID codes are stamped on the block. You need to find the letters stamped on the passenger side.

The numbers you listed in your first post don't make sense to me....unless there is a 'MT' stamped there??

wkillgs the best I can do is. the back of the motor Ifound 13-9045-3.This number is behind the distribter.  Up front on the block not shure if it is letters or numbers, but looking at the motor on right side 6I50164,  left side 4I3b4bb2, this number is on the block just in front of the valley pan,be hind water hoes.

Richard, the closest match to the block casting number is 1349046. According to the chart on Buicks.net, that covers 1961-65 401's.

The numbers on the front.....you are looking in the correct place. However, I generally see something like this:
On the right side of the motor would be stamped:
LR  368
LR= decodes as a 1965 Skylark GS 401
368= production code, or date it was built. We believe it's numbered as a 2 year cycle.....so 368 minus 364= 004, or built on January 4th, 1965.

On the left side of the motor, I would see something like
5B145586
Those 8 digits should match the last 8 digits of the cars VIN. The VIN plate is on a plate attached to the drivers side door jamb. The VIN doe NOT appear on the cowl data plate attached to the firewall.

In the example above, 5= 1965,  and B= means the car was built in Baltimore.
The stamp used for a '6" often looked like a 'b".

Unfortunately, what you have stamped on your engine doesn't follow the normal layout.
It's most likely a 64-65 401, since the 63 and earlier engines used a different crankshaft for the old Dynaflow transmissions....unless of course, someone changed the crankshaft!

I think you will find it is a 62 401 from a LeSabre built in freemont CA. Before 65, the the vin had the model (4= LeSabre), followed by a letter for the year (I=62) followed by a number for the plant (3= Freemont, CA), followed by 6 number serial number of the car (if your b's are really 6's).
