Source for clutch z-bar bushings?
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:24:51 PM »
Anyone know where to get these? They fit in the tube welded on to the frame.
GM #1359510
These are 3/4" I.D... The only bushings I can find are the pedal bushings which are too small..... :P

I searched high and low at the Carlisle swap meet for something that would work...
I came home with some 55 Chev bushings that are a larger diameter. I trimmed them down, but they are too thin and leave too much clearance. :P
Out of desperation, I settled on some steel 3/4" EMT conduit. Took a lengthwise slice in them to reduce the diameter to fit. The z-bar now fits nicely.  I don't like the steel-on steel contact, but it'll do for now.

Still looking for the correct bushings if someone knows of any....

Walt,

I looked a few years ago, and came up empty. A friend of mine took the inner and outer sleeves and filled them with a black liquid nylon and let it solidify. It will probably outlive the car. I'm having another one done for Brian Stone now.

Mark, I think they are talking about the Nylon bushings that go in the sleeve that is welded to the top of the frame.  The Z-bar shaft then goes through the bushings.  The ones in mine were fine--just cleaned them up with some carb cleaner and put it all back together with some clean grease.    I have made bushings like that before out of a flat sheet of nylon.  Don't remember where the nylon sheet came from--just rolled it into a cylinder and cut it to where it fit perfect.  I think I made the bushings in the reverse lockout lever on my 4-speed shifter handle like that.

Right....the ones in the frame mount. I only have one set of originals for the 3 cars.
I'll probably go the route Brian suggested and use some nylon sheet. Industrial suppliers like McMaster Carr will have it.
I'll often wander around hardware department looking for 'something' that will work...

Mark, for the bushing at the top of the z-bar for the pedal rod, there is a Corvette sway bar link bushing avail from GM that works well. It needs a bit of grinding to shorten it, then it will work and look like a stock one.

Ha!  I do the same thing, sometimes with brilliant results, sometimes not so much, but I know that "wander"ing action.

Jon Thompson had some made for his car just recently. As I recall it didn't take too much.
I've been bugging him to get on board here. I'll just have to keep trying.

The price for a set of bushings $18.00 , ( these are machined from stock, custom MADE IN THE USA not some crap from china) I am wanting to make 25 to 50 sets .
WHO IS INTERESTED? and needs a set or two! Let me know. There is nothing like driving a stick nailhead powered BUICK! Thanks Jon! (pics on soon)
