Where to get parts
« on: March 12, 2013, 08:57:11 AM »
Thanks for volunteering Mark !!!! :hello2: :icon_thumright:

Maybe we can use this post as a starting point to gather some leads as to where are the places to buy parts in general and give some tips and leads on specific parts for our cars. Many tips have already been posted and just need a link to them. One that comes to mind is wheel cylinders and brakes. A very useful posting on this is here http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,272.30.html.

Anybody else recall a useful posting in the past ?

Dan, I'll start digging later, but one that comes to mind is coil springs.

Mark,

There are a couple of good places to get coil springs. The place I like is in this post http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,1484.msg8376.html#msg8376 They make the coil springs to your order. I have had them make +1 and +2 inch ride height for the rear coils. The ride is the same as stock but the car sits up nicer. Others like different suppliers.

A/C info-
Auto trans info-

I didn't delve into those areas, so I need to rely on you guys.

Mark,

I'll get a list going on the Convertible Top suppliers. Right now I'm kinda swamped with work but should have some time this weekend to gather what info I have. I don't know that much about AC or transmissions suppliers or repair shops, anybody else?

Unfortunately not. Have not owned an automatic car. The only item purchased for my A/C was a compressor. Don't know how many A/C questions we would get.

Mark, I can't help much on those items, but perhaps I can help with other items. I have a bunch of 1980's auto parts catalogs as well as GM catalogs for cross reference.

I was considering starting a post on correct body-mount bushings, if there's interest.

Hi Walt,

The body mount bushing info would be great - I've never gone into what is available for those or what is really right.
I used a standard Year One package if I recall...

That made me think about the core support bushings too. I had to piece together a set from about 3 or 4 cars
because nothing I found was like the originals.

For the convertible, auto trans & A/C parts, I'm looking for what suppliers had the best/right parts, or any parts for that matter.

For the AC parts, the best source is Classic Auto Air in Florida.  They do not have 65 GS specific parts sitting on the shelf like AC hoses/tubes, but the can take your originals and re-manufacture them using new hose material and crimps along with your original tubes and fittings.  They can also re-plate all the metal parts on the hose assemblies for you.  They can get you complete rebuilt AC compressors as well as things like seals, bearings, etc for it.  Another great service they have is they can take your original dryer assembly, cut it apart, and rebuild it with new desicant in it.  When they are done, it looks just like it did when it came from the factory whereas the aftermarket dryers look completely different and do not fit in the  bracket properly.  In addition, they can rebuild your POA valve and make replacement metal tubes (use your old one as a pattern).  Another trick they have is they can re-calibrate your POA valve for R134 when they rebuild it.

Brian,

Thanks for the info! I'll have to use them to get the A/C working in the Impala again.
After the GS is done that is... :laughing7:

Brian,

Thanks for that info for the A/C. It's been over 20 years since I restored my GS. I'm a bit out of touch with what and who is out there for parts and service.
Even back in the late '80s , I wasn't able to find anyone local that wanted to rebuild my ST 300. I ended up doing it myself. The parts were still available then.

And thanks to all those that have allready contributed to this thread. I'm sure there are more out there with some more info.
