Windshield installation
« on: March 02, 2009, 05:58:39 PM »
Is a windshield installation a "do-it-yourself" job or is it best to leave it to the pros?  The old windshield is out, car has been repainted and I've installed all new molding clips.  I've read the service manual and other articles about this topic.  It seems like something that I could do with the proper care and a helper.  Has anyone else done this?  Any advice or tips.

John,

Have done a couple of them, not too bad of a job. You will need the seal , comes as a roll. Don't remember the thickness, there are different sizes . Will also need a primer for the surface, it brushes on. I allways picked up my supplies from an auto body supplier.

If you allready have the glass , it may be worth checking out what it would cost at a glass shop. the labor shouldn't be too bad . You,ve allready done the hard part, getting it out.

John

Had both front and rear installed for 100.00.  He came to my house.  Money well spent.  It looked simple but I did not want any leaks, so I had a Pro do it.  There are guys everywhere looking to do side work for extra cash.

I replaced automotive glass for 10+yrs.  Always looks easy until it leaks.  More to it than you think.  Have a pro do it .  Besides, if it does leak later, they should have a warranty included.  Tom, you are right.  Most guys will do it on the side for a little extra scratch in their pocket.  Good luck.  Mike
