Factory marking found on driveshaft
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:24:06 PM »
All who may be interested,

I thought I'd show a couple of photos of the factory markings that I found on the driveshaft.  It appears to be done with a yellow grease pencil rather than with paint.  It's probably a quality control check that the U-joints have been greased.  Marked on both ends as well as yoke. Of course I will try to duplicate these markings for posterity.

John,

I'm working on the shaft for the HT that came from Brian. I found a white stripe around the middle of the shaft while cleaning it up for pre-blasting. If you have any pics of a 4 speed driveshaft that has paint marks, please post! Thanks!

I'll get pics up this weekend of what I found.

Mark,

My sources say that the driveshaft for a '65 GS 4-speed should be coded with one white and one purple  1/2" wide band.  This is apparently the same as in 1966 per Walt's document.  Automatic transmission cars would have one pink band. The other yellow markings on the ends of the driveshaft are quality control marking to indicate that grease and/or lube job has been done.

I can't wait to see the progress on your hardtop over the Thanksgiving weekend.  See you then.

John, Walt,

I've photographed and measured the color bands. If you have a color match for the purple, like something in One-Shot
sign painters enamel, let me know if you can. Send me a pm or e-mail.

Thanks!

Seriously, take a look over at

They do offer a 'Driveshaft Green', 'Spindle Orange', 'Pittman Blue' and 'Spring Lavender'.
They have quite the selection of products for the most discriminating restorer!
....Gotta love the 'Distributor tag red Dye' ! :headbang:
