Rear sway bar.
« on: March 04, 2012, 01:04:09 PM »
I think I would like to stiffen the rear up in my GS. Anyone got suggestions to what to buy? Was it possible to get one back in the day for the car or was there only aftermarket? No need to anything fancy because I want it to be so stock looking as possible.

A friend put one on his 64 Beaumont(Canadian A body). He used one from an 85 Monte carlo. He boxed in the rear control arms and it bolted right on. I thought they were standard equipment on the 65 GS?

Buick didn't use the rear sway bars in 1965, but Olds 442 did. Later, it became avail on other A-bodies.
You will have to use boxed lower control arms with the sway bar. You can buy the boxed control arms, or just buy the reinforcements and weld them on.

As an example, Ground Up lists a sway bar for $129, Control arms (with bushings) for $200, bushings only for $60, or the whole package, boxed control arms with sway bar and hardware for $300.

Jan,

Your '65 GS should have the boxed control arms on it already. The Parts Place sells a 1" rear sway bar (SU3795Z) for $89. They also have a mounting kit (shims and bolts) SU2263Z for $14. Don't know if they ship internationally but you have a source here if needed.

Dan,
I have never seen a 65 GS that came with the boxed lower control arms.  Did either of your cars come with them?  I know mine did not, and the Freemont built 65 GS I parted out several years ago didn't have them either.  I have a rear end out of a 65 GS at my house now that belongs to a friend and it has the un-boxed control arms on it too.

Brian, my bad as they say. Three sides do not make a box.  :BangHead:
On my car I use the sway bar with the original UNBOXED lower control arms. Checked my pictures of Jan's car and they are original unboxed units.

Yep, checked it out when I came home from work today and not boxed. I have a friend that is a very good welder and I think I will have him boxe them for me, and then put the sway bar on.

Boxing is more than just welding a plate on the bottom.  The correct piece to box them has too "loops" in it that loop around the bolt holes where the sway bar bolts go through.  You can buy the pieces to box them yourself and weld them in.  I thing OPG has the pieces to do it, as well as do other places.  I think you can get them from sellers off Ebay as well.

The best price I have found on the rear sway bar insert is from Inline Tube for $28.00 for the set. The Part # is INL 10396. Thanks Billl.

Thanks for all help. I saw today at opgi that they have a complete kit with 1" sway bar, shim kit, bolts and the plates for boxing the arms for $124, so I think I will go for that.
