Is this a 65 Skylark GS flywheel?
« on: December 21, 2011, 05:38:17 PM »
Before I have this flywheel balanced with a 425 LX engine, I need to know if it is really correct for a 65 GS Skylark, of course with a four speed. It measures 13.5 inches without the starter gear teeth. Any help appreciated.

I think I have answered my own question. Seems I asked this question two or three years ago on the V8buick site and forgot about it when I started disassembling the frozen 425 short block. The answers I received a couple of years ago supported it being a 65 Skylark GS flywheel. I discovered my memory lapse when doing a search of the V8Buick site on this topic. So if you know anything additional on this topic, please let me know, but I believe the flywheel to be what I need.

The outer bolt pattern(s) looks exactly like my GS flywheel.
Better count the ring gear teeth and measure the OD to be sure. A BBC flywheel will bolt to a Nailhead, but the diameter is a little different.
I can take a look at the one in my basement and get you some details on diameters and offsets and stuff.

BTW, if you get ARP flywheel bolts, you have to grind them a little shorter, or else they will go thru the crank and hit the engine block!

Hi Walt, I would appreciate any information you can supply. I will take measurements and count the teeth today.

Hi Walt, and anyone else with a 65 nailhead flywheel laying around.

I took some new measurements and counted the teeth on the flywheel, I hope this will help identify it. It has 166 teeth, overall diameter is 14" (13.5" without the teeth). The recess on the back of the flywheel where it contacts the crank is approximately 3/32" and the recess on the clutch side is 7/16" with a diameter of 6 3/16". The bolt pattern for the clutch has a diameter of 12 5/8" and it is one inch thick. I didn't weigh it, but it is heavy.

Any help appreciated,

Looks like a nailhead flywheel to me.  Has all the correct features, and has the big rectangular void in the back to balance the engine.  Also has the dowel pin alignment hole and has the 3 small holes coming out of the center area at an angle like all the Buick flywheels of that vintage had.

Finally dug mine out for some pics, and it looks like a match!
14" overall diameter  with 166 teeth. Recess on one side is about 0.010", on the other side it's 0.50". Overall thickness is 1.080"
Brian or Ted once mentioned the full size cars had a recessed pressure plate.

I'll post some pics just because I took the time to take them....

Thanks Walt. Sure looks like a match to me too. Difference in overall thickness is probably because I used a tape measure! Since I haven't had any interest in someone buying the 425 block, I will head off to the local engine guy and see about starting a rebuild. (I also have 401 I could use that would be fine with me, but since I have the 425 I might as well go for the gusto)
