Welcome to the 1965 Buick Gran Sport Registry.

The 1965 Buick Skylark Gran Sport Registry is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the ’65 GS. It is independent and not affiliated with General Motors, Buick Motor Division or any other organization.

This is the latest step in the evolution of the same Registry started by the late Steve Shuman in 1978. It has been subsequently maintained by Anthony Gatta and John Egel. Loren Alexander is the current Director and has possession of all registrations since its inception. Loren also owns and manages this website to help connect others who share the same passion and interest in the ’65 GS.

Please note that many of the earlier registrations were merely snapshots with names and cities. Anthony and John have revised the registration form and have updated as many records as possible over the last few years. Consequently, the information compiled on the ’65 GS has become more detailed and enlightening. If it has been several years since your ’65 GS was registered, we invite you to re-register. Please bring it to our attention if this is the case.

John Egel is still actively involved with the Registry as a assistant Director and we are dedicated to assisting you with any questions you may have regarding maintaining, restoring or modifying your ’65 GS.

I drove this car for two summers, 1991 and 92. I started a restoration in 1993. It didn’t turn into a body-off until 1996. Restoration has been in progress since. The car is currently in paint, and drivetrain is back in, but there is still much to do. Engine, trans and rear are original to the car. The front sheetmetal is not, as it was involved in a collision long before I acquired it.

I acquired this GS as a parts car. I saw it running in St. Paul, MN and chased down the owner. They pulled the engine that night to keep. I saw just before they pulled it out, and it was 100% original. The owner called me the next morning to drop the roller at my house. It was unsaveable due to rust issues. The frame was rusted out behind the front wheels, and the gas tank was sitting on 2×4 laid across the frame inside the trunk. The car had a square grille emblem, so it may be of help in the search for information about those. Build date was 01D, Kansas City built car. Paint code was R-2? Other codes on data plate are; E 2XCP 4S 5

My car was body on restored in the early 90’s by someone in Florida, where the car was originally sold new. The restoration isn’t of the highest quality, with more than normal amounts of bondo used to cover a light hit on the passenger quarter. During this restoration, the car was painted a gold/bronze color, and a black vinyl roof was added. My intent is to restore the car back to its original color scheme, when finances permit. I also have the original bill of sale from Orange Buick, in Orlando, Florida. I cannot state with certainty whether the mileage is original or not. My car also came with Soft Ray tinted windows all around, plus rear back up lights, since those options aren’t among the ones listed above.

Previous owner was a Buick collector who bought this car in 1983 and upgraded with some excellent used and NOS parts (he worked in a Buick dealer parts dept.). I purchased in 1986, drove it home 140 miles and put it into storage as a future project. I have too many higher priority projects, so am putting this car up for sale. I recently pulled it out of storage to get it running and have gone over the car in great detail. Although I believe the mileage to be original, it has had a great deal of bodywork done – front clip replaced, right quarter replaced, left quarter has bondo repairs, right door has lots of bondo (I have a replacement), repainted. However there is no rust anywhere and no frame damage that I can see. The interior is pretty nice original, and I believe the chrome will clean up pretty well. Although the engine is an LR block, it is not a numbers-matching car.

I have NEVER GOTTEN A BUILD SHEET BUT BELEIVE THE CAR WAS STANDARD TRANSMISSION because of bracket on frame for clutch assembly , it currently has a 1964 401 and full size automatic transmission 3 speed . From the information that I have been able to obtain, I am the fourth owner of this car. The interior is original with the exception of the carpeting and rear package tray. The car was originally from Texas, which helps to explain the A/C and power window accesories especially in an era when an AM radio was an option. The owner that I purchased the car from was a Vietnam vet. He informed me that he had always wanted a convertible GS and could not afford both of these options, so he settled for the convertible Skylark in 1965, which he still owns to this day. Several years later, he saw this car advertised in Hemmings magazine and he knew he had to have it. After owning it for many years, older age and the addition of health issues caused him to sell it. I first noticed the car at our annual car show in Huntington N.Y. in the year 2000. It was announced at one of our Buick club meeting, a couple of months after the show that the car was for sale. I have now owned this car for 10 years. The car is turguoise with a white top and white bucket seat interior, center console, road wheels, P/S, PWR brakes and remote mirror.

Has some rust around rear windows and lower rear quarters. I repainted it all Astro Blue had some trouble with my spray gun it was done with laquer. Doors are solid and rust free so is the front end, New shocks etc. all the normal stuff. Front end is tight steering wheel has cracks in it. Seats were redone to match the original kept the original material off the back o0f front seats so it was used when seats were done. They look great. Dash pad has some cracks in it New carpet in 1990 when I redid it Year One was the supplier for all the items that were ordered. Oh almost for got it has a Kenny Bell cam and lifters in it not a real wild cam but a nice power curve. Has Buick floor mats from my Uncles 67 Electra they look almost new. When I get to the next section it won’t let me enter any information any help-?

This car was purchased new by a young man that only had it for a short time before being drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. He never returned home, and the car sat in his parents barn for over 20 years with only 22,000 miles. The car has had several long periods of sitting without being driven over the years. I hope to change that.
