The devils in the details- Restoring parking lamps
« on: August 05, 2021, 08:31:40 PM »
Finally getting around to finishing up the restoration of some parking lamp housings. These have been stripped, plated, painted and new wiring installed. After being re-plated, I coated the exterior with a clear coating to help the plating hold up. The interior is painted like original, but these are too glossy, so another scuff and repaint to come to correct that. Now they are ready for the re-wiring. I had the correct coded wire made from one of my suppliers. Black with white tracer and black with green tracer. The wires have new button contacts crimped and soldered to them , then threaded through a new plastic contact base. The rubber boot is original that has been cleaned and softened. A little bit of silglide is applied to the inside of the boot to assist installation. Once the wires are installed into the contact base and threaded through the reconditioned boot , new female connectors are attached and then snapped into a plastic connector. Fun project.
Special thanks to Chuck for assisting me with getting the correct plating.

 Fun project.

Looks great Loren!   :hello2:

. . . .  Just one question . . . . So how do you install those super bright LED arrays in those housings? . . . . . . . .

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Very nice work  :icon_thumright:
Loren, what color is the inside. I thought it would be more silver.

  Thank you.
They are sprayed white , but are too glossy.  They need to be sprayed again , but with a flat finish.

Special thanks to Chuck for assisting me with getting the correct plating.

What is the name of the plating finish called?
And what company plated them?

Thanks!

Color is gold iridate. Chuck will have to chime in on the company.

"Gold iridite" is actually zinc dichromate plating.  There is a company here in Kalamazoo, MI that does that and other types of zinc plating.  I had all my black and clear zinc as well as the zinc dichromate done by them.

They are pretty small and I doubt they would do remote business.  PM for more info.

A suggestion Chuck. IF the company will not accept or receive mail maybe someone can send the items to you???
