Was wondering if there is a source for new tail light gaskets for 65 gs.

Contemplating some surgery on the rear end of the GS (see Wyoming 65 GS Restoration thread). I have damage to both rear corners where the taillights fit. Poor repairs in the late 70's used filler to make the taillights fit correct. I have two donors cars that at least look like the lights should fit. My question is how close to the they fit particularly around the ends where the straight run transitions to the curve moving to the outside? I think there was a post explaining how difficult it is to fit these in and they needed to be tightened up incrementally over a couple of days. Is that normal then and I should expect some gap on the curved portion? Wonder if all the taillights are slightly different as well? I don't have the new gaskets and maybe they help fill some of the gap. Trying to determine what and where to cut. Thanks.

Back in 1965, the sheet metal panels were built and welded by humans. There will be some differences from car to car, but for the most part, the taillight housings should fit the same profile as the body's sheet metal. The factory would fill those sheet metal seams with lead before painting. To compensate for any minor differences, especially at the corners, a 1/2 thick, soft rubber gaskets is used. I would use the taillight housing as a guide to get the sheet metal as close as possible to the same curvature. The new, thick, soft rubber gasket will seal the deal. Be careful while bolting the center emblem trim in between the two taillight housings so as not to break those two tabs off. If the tab starts to bend while tightening the nuts, stop! as the next thing to happen will be that the tabs break off. (voice of experience) Just take your time and everything will go well.
