Title: Question about the eBay hardtop
Post by: dsags on February 07, 2011, 09:25:33 AM
There is a 65 GS hardtop on eBay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1965-Buick-Skylark-Gran-Sport-GS-401-24k-Actual-Miles-/330528054447?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4cf501dcaf - that is supposed to have only 24,000 miles. Nice car, but what is puzzling to me is that it is loaded with options but the trim tag on the firewall only shows an 'S' code. Thought it should show lots of other codes. Can someone enlighten me on this ?

Also might need to look at the 'detailed' pictures -  http://www.spudsgarage.com/vehicles/65BuickGS/index.htm - that show the trim tag.

Dan,

A couple of observations from me:
Has a Special/Sportwagon front bumper
Inside grille bars are silver - should be black - probably hit in front in the past?
Wiring cover on the firewall is 70s-80s GM plastic
Battery cables replaced on a 24K mile car?

Looks like there is some restoration work is done on this car. Nice car though.

Mark

Wow, that's a neat car!
Baltimore-built cars didn't put many codes on the firewall tag.
My 65 only has an 'S' on it too, but it barely had any options....just  4 speed, radio, back-up lights and door edge guards.
There's a good chance the car has a Fisher Body build-sheet stuck in the rear seat springs that contains more info.
The protecto-plate would have a few option codes on it too.

If I were going to buy that car I would want to take a really close look underneath. Adversiting says it is an Arizona car that was only driven in nice weather, but it has more rust on the frame and crossmember than a car on the road for 40 years in California. I would expect a cleaner frame on a west coast car with only 24,000 fair weather miles. Add the Special/wagon front bumper and I would want to look very close at that car's undercarriage and trunk.

With all that said, it is a beautiful 65 GS and I wouldn't mind having it in my garage (but not at thirty-nine thousand dollars).

I didn't notice the condition of the frame, etc. until Kurt mentioned it.
Look at the undercarriage shot of the frame with the front of the lower rear control arm.

I knew you guys would help me out.
Mark, nice catch on those details of the front end and undercarriage. I hadn't noticed the bumper.
And thanks for the information on the Baltimore trim tags. I thought they were like the Lansing plates.
Agree that $39,500 is quite high. The details don't seem to agree with the description, but there seems to be a few qualifiers in the description.h
