Title: steering box

Ok guys what would be a good steering box swap for my 65? I'm sure someone has already done this, any ideas would be great.

Bob,

I used the quick power steering box from The Parts Place in Chicago. Part number is ST2864Z. Price is $249.

Dan, is that a direct bolt in or is there some mods that have to be done?

Pretty much a direct bolt in. If you call them they are very good about telling you exactly what the installation process will be. There are other steering boxes available so you may want to check around. Forgot to mention this box will give your car a three and one quarter turns lock to lock.

There are lots of options out there.... The quickest boxes (approx 2-1/2 turns lock-lock) have a 12.7:1 ratio. They were used on some 82-87 G-bodies (Buick GN/T-type, Monte SS, Olds 442), Caprice cop cars, and even Jeep Grand Cherokees.
Installation may require adapters for the metric hose fittings and a different rag joint/steering coupler.....our GS's have a 3/4" shaft, and the PS boxes have a 13/16" shaft. The later fast boxes have the 3/4" shaft.

I used a box out of a 67 El Camino and sent it to www.powersteering.com for a quick ratio conversion. I also sent him a 65 GS power steering pump to rebuild. He supplied all parts necessary for the conversion such as the coupler and hoses. Great customer service, I am very satisfied and no adapters needed. Probably on of the more expensive options.

Bob, The rebuild and conversion of the gearbox was $325 and the pump was $129, plus shipping. I am getting these numbers off Chip's website, so I could be off a few bucks. I do remember that the shipping costs are fairly high because of the weight. Seems like $50 each way from and to California. I wanted to make certain everything fit and looked original and Chip has great customer service. So I went we him for all the parts, hoses, coupling, and rebuilding the gearbox and pump. I am satisfied and will use him again when I need power steering components. I would check with him first though to see if he has a core I wouldn't have to ship.
