Well I have been looking at my air cleaner that sits too high and is too short for my liking, not to mention it has a plastic adapter held together with silicone adhesive, and I want something cool. I have found a metal bottom to a GTO air cleaner online for $55. The vendor says it is for a 65 GTO with an AFB and a louvered chrome top. Seems this might work on a 65 GS if the outside diameter is the same as an aftermarket aircleaner. Anyone have any experience with these air cleaner bases?

Kurt, repo GTO bases and tops are available from Pontiac resto suppliers such as Performance Years and Ames.
Base is $70, the louvered tops are near $100 and avail in chrome, stainless or aluminum. Those louvered tops were also used on the 67 GS340.
Performance Years also lists a ram air base (plastic) for $119. I don't know what was used for the top.

I bought one for my 340; the base is very simple; AFB size hole, dimple for the linkage; flat disc...now the problem is the louvered top just has a foam filter and not near big enough for any kind of decent filter. I know pics would help, cannot promise anything on that...
They do look cool.

I was hoping to use the GTO type base and an aftermarket filter and chrome top. The thing I don't know is what diameter the filter is for the GTO setup and would it allow enough clearance for the hood using a two or three in tall filter.

Looked up the 66 GTO air filter on the Wix filter website..... same filter as used on the 67 GS 340, and even 61-62 Corvette.
