Trying to determine what is correct for the cars built at different plants. Post where your car was built and how the firewall tag was finished--was it bare aluminum, painted silver, painted black or something else.
Mine was built in Flint and was either silver or bare aluminum--I can't remember which and am going by a picture of the car when I got it, I painted it black with the firewall when I restored the car and took it back to bare aluminum now trying to make it more correct.

Maybe this will help. Go to www.442bro.com and click on ACC CODES, this web site has great info on 65 442's, some info can be applied to 65 GS's.

I looked there and nothing about the finish on the tags, and nothing about the Buick plants other than Freemont.

This was located under ACC CODES, I just copied and pasted it.
Fremont tags were not painted, so you can conclude that they were riveted in place after the car was built.

My 65 GS conv. was built the 2nd wk. of feb. in Flint. From my pic. in 1969, it was bare alum.

Did we ever reach a consensus here?

1) The 65 GS Hardtop was built the third week in July in Flint, tag is bare aluminum.
2) The 65 GS post coupe was built the second week in August in Flint, tag is bare aluminum.
3) The 65 GS convertible was built the third week in June in Baltimore, the tag is painted black.

All my 65-6 Baltimore cars (5) have black painted tags. My 2 Fremont built '66's are black.
It appears Flint built cars are silver. Are they masked off or attached after firewall is painted?
Kansas City would be the other assembly plant.

Got it. So all firewall tags are black, EXCEPT for Flint built cars, which are silver.
Thanks!

all firewall tags are black, EXCEPT for Flint built cars, which are silver.
And by “silver”, I mean bare aluminum.

I've only had one Baltimore built car 3rd week of Feb. and it was black. My other 3 cars have all been Flint cars from January to April and they were all bare.
