For Sale, SOLD
Just came across this on one of my many shelves. I thought I had sold the last of the re-plated hood latches, but found this one today. $125 shipping included lower 48 states.
Thanks for looking,

Sorry, it's gone. Just sold it a couple of days ago and hadn't gotten around to changing the post.

Side question - Do hood latches have black painted handles from the factory, or were they plated gold too?
-
Dan, I believe they were zinc dichromate plated and then the handles painted black on the GS only to match the black accents in the grille. That's how it appeared to have been done on the Shuman car and how I did mine.
Other theories?

CONFIRMED via NOS hood latch seen on eBay - the hood latch handles are painted BLACK.
BUT, do you think this was for GRAN SPORTS only??? (Much like how the grille and headlamp doors were painted black instead of silver on the SKYLARKS) Thoughts???

The parts books that I have only show one latch and also used on the 64 models! Group # 8.080 part # 571800! Shows no difference between Skykark or GS!?

Noted, BUT were there different part numbers for the headlamp doors? (black vs. silver) Off the top of my head, I don't think so... :dontknow:

Yes, different part numbers for both the headlight doors and the grilles. See assembly manual info attached. But I don't find different part numbers for the hood latches. I'm now thinking all the latch handles had black paint to somewhat hide them between the chrome grille bars. Otherwise the gold color of the base plating would show through and look out of place. That's only my theory....

Also, unlike the NOS latch in Dan's ebay picture, the latch on the Shuman car was not entirely black on the handle. It appeared to have been dipped in paint after plating, but not all the way to the end of the handle. So that's how I finished mine in the Verde Howitzer.

One more piece of information. Here's another photo I just took from the Shuman car. This time from the side of the handle. I perceive a line where the black color starts, hence deciding to paint my restoration that way. If you perceive it differently that's OK. I doubt that either approach would be viewed as incorrect.

Great info all around.
With all of the above data points, I believe we can say with extreme confidence that ALL Skylark & Skylark Gran Sport 64-65 hood latches had a BLACK painted handle.
Thanks everyone!!!
