Title: VIN locations on the Super Turbine 300
Post by: 9er3delta on October 04, 2021, 09:18:15 AM
Where are the VIN numbers stamped on the Super Turbine 300 transmission cases for both the Skylark and GS?  Does anyone have a photo of a VIN on a transmission and its location?

I have multiple Super Turbine transmissions that are currently living on a shelf.  Two of them actually belong to two Skylarks we're restoring.  One is a 65 GS and there is only one option for which one fits the Nailhead.  It would still be cool to be able to confirm it is the original transmission to the car before I send it off to the transmission shop for a full restore and rebuild.  If it isn't, I'd consider putting something else in it.

Same with the other BOP pattern transmissions.  If I knew the VIN location, it would save me from sending all of them to the transmission shop to be tanked, just to find the right one.  And again, if I didn't have an actual original transmission for the non-GS Skylark, I would consider going in a different direction for the Skylark transmission too.

A side note, I've seen photos of Super Turbine 300's with a tag riveted or screwed to the side of the case.  None of mine have the tag.

The Super Turbine 300 in the 65 GS can be identified by the designation " NK" stamped on the low servo cover (on the right side) As per the 65 Skylark Gran Sport manual.

It will have a Nailhead bell housing if it is from a GS. All other ST300s have a BOP bell housing. It will also be coded NK on the servo cover as described above. There will be a two digit year code on the servo cover above and a three digit date code beside. The identification code and date code will correspond to the Protect-O-Plate if available for the vehicle.

How would one interpret the 3-digit date code shown in the picture?

I have heard several explanations of the date coding, but I am convinced of none of them.  They are inconsistent between parts. My 65 was built in the first week of August (08A). The 400 engine has a LR 599 code and the transmission is NK 242. They match the Protect-O-Plate exactly.  So, obviously they are date coded differently. Maybe the engine is by shifts in a year and the trans is by the day? Didn't the 65 GS start later in the production year?

I'd go along with that.
My 66 Protecto-plates are similar, MR 452 engine code and NK 190 D trans code on a May build car.  Note the 'D' in trans code, some of my cars have a 'N' suffix..... so Day or Night.

Build #001 may have been the first day of the model year (Sept), not the first day of the year (Jan). If someone has an early build Skylark (Sept-Nov), those numbers would give us some good data points.

So, just to make sure I understand, there is no VIN stamped in the transmission case on a 1965 Super Turbine 300, like there is the on the Skylark's engine, frame, body, etc?  Thanks for all of the feedback thus far!

Just finished looking at both 65 NK ST300 transmissions I have on the shelf. There is no VIN number on either one.
As far as that goes, I don’t recall seeing a tag on a’65 ST300.

Thanks Loren and All for the info.  It has helped me get a battle plan together for both of my restorations.  My later model GM's have the VIN on the transmission, but I didn't know when it had started.  Apparently not in '65 on the A body Buicks.

My GS will get the original (as best as I can confirm) ST300 since the date code matches the build.  I will probably put a different transmission (TH 350 or 200/700R) in the L74 Skylark and put the original BOP ST300's on the shelf.  If I ever sell the L74 (zero likelihood), the next owner will have an option on the original transmission.

I don't know IF this relates or not to the ST300 as it does to a ST400.  I know that on the data plate on the 400 is the number when the trans. was built. So Jan. 1st of 1964 would have been a 1 (one), & would follow along. In other words if the data plate said "465" this would be the 465th. day the trans. was built. 465 would translate into 465 days since number one was built, or 4th. week of May 1965 & match the build date of the vehicle.
Understand???

Hi All,

Just for the sake of the topic I thought I would send a pic of the markings on my 65 Skylark, 300ci ST 300.

This  is the only markings I could find, The stamping reads "65 MJ 192"
