For the 300 V8, the snorkel points to the driver side.
For the '65 GS, I've seen the air cleaner snorkel pointed in both directions - which is correct? Does a/c vs. non-a/c make a difference? What about the '66 QJet cars?

Hi,
If my memory serves, the sbb air cleaner has front stamped on them, and not positive if that is the case on the pancake ones.
If the opening hasn't been altered and a original carb, believe they can only be mounted 1 way.
Regards,

Mine all point to the passenger side, AC or not.

California emissions air cleaner snorkels point to the driver side.
EDIT; I?ve seen the smog hose come out of the air cleaner body and the snorkel pointed in the other direction as shown below. On 65s...

Is that the same for 66? Seems like it would not work on my 66 CA project car.

Does the correct 65 GS air cleaner have “front” stamped on it or no?

Does the correct 65 GS air cleaner have “front” stamped on it or no?
I would say yes. Here is a picture of the air cleaner on the Steve Shuman car, which I believe is original. I know that Steve had some of those stickers made for restoration, so the sticker might not be original. I have some of the stickers that I bought with the car. And a few other stickers as well. I haven't seen the oil filter sticker before...

I would say 'No'.
I do have a swap meet find with the stamping. I believe it's an early Cadillac unit. Here's one on eBay. Note the snorkel flares where it meets the body.

My 66 project car has the same original decal. Seems like it can only point one direction because of the AIR pump.

Hi Chuck, Hi everyone with questions on which way the snorkel points. It points to the right side of the GS with no AC And the correct decal on the front of the air cleaner housing should read 6422289. Yes, Chuck Steve Shuman did have those decals reproduced along with a few others. When I received the Registry paperwork from Sandy Shuman 20+years ago she gave me an envelope containing the decals. I passed them along to the new Director after my Triplets were born.
To answer the other comment, If you find an early Cadillac,Riviera or I think Olds used the same air cleaner to, and the snorkel is pointed in the opposite direction you can correct this buy turning the unit upside down and you will see the adjustment tabs to turn the base. Heat the tabs with MAPP (yellow) gas and bend the tabs up.Then tap the base with a rubber mallet and spray penetrating oil all the way around to loosen up any rust that probably formed over the years. It may take several sprays and an overnight soak to get the base plate to slide. When it slides, slide it in the direction needed then turn it over to check position of the snorkel, if OK then turn it over clean off the excess penetrating oil, heat up the tabs bend them back into position. Clean the unit with preps all or wash with Simple Green or a good Dish Washing liquid and you are ready for repaint. This worked for me, I sold the air cleaner years ago to a Registry member that wanted to return their GS to stock condition...

Sorry, I confused "stamped" with the decal. My bad....
Yeah Tony, I must have gotten what was left of the decals when I bought Steve's red convertible. I have plenty to use on my restoration!

Hi Bob & Chuck, I stand corrected, Yes those left coast GSs did have a different setup due to the California emission standards. I have never seen one of them in person here on the east coast...
And Chuck I have one set of those decals left, they are going on my GS Coupe after it gets painted. It should have been in the paint shop by now but NYC is on total lock down due to the Virus. So considering what people are going thru here it's low on the priority list now. I have plenty of other things around the house to do....
