Title: steering wheel hunt
Post by: Robin Cook on November 25, 2019, 09:17:34 AM
Restoring my 65 gran sport and looking for a correct steering wheel, red maroon interior, clearly not much out there but I'm hopeful you can help. What's the word on recolouring? Anyone repainting successfully? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

I recommend finding a core wheel (condition of plastic not important), and then sending it out to Koch's. \

Interior paint code info here: http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/chipdisplay.cgi?year=1965&manuf=GM&smodel=Buick&info=&page=25 (http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/chipdisplay.cgi?year=1965&manuf=GM&smodel=Buick&info=&page=25)

Hey Dan, Thanks for the assistance,  very helpful, hopefully it will help with how to decide on the colour of my package tray. Interior colour was maroon red, I “think” headliner was white or a light colour, would package tray match the seat colours?
I located a wheel core today, and will have a look at it when received.

I contacted Koch, current cost is $650.00. Any suggestions on how to get better pricing? Anyone else out there?
Thanks

The only other place I could find that does a strip of plastic to the metal frame and a recast, was a few years back and $1500.

I do not think you can find anything better. Since it requires a specific mold, it is going ot be very difficult to find anyone doing them.

Considering, even an older wheel without cracks (or very small cracks) will set you back almost as much as having it redone. And an older wheel is going to crack or worsen.

And, a steering wheel is a very obvious "eye catcher".

Other option is to buy a no-longer-made McIntyre Enterprises reproduction wheel.  These are high quality repros, but you will need to finalize the finish (sold "as-cast").

Loren had one for sale here: http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,3505.0.html (http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,3505.0.html)
