-18 degrees for us this morning. I'm sure some of you had worse. It was really super cool viewing the Super Blood Wolf Moon at midnight. And mighty cold also!! :icon_thumright:

Hi Chuck, When we woke up this morning it was 7 degrees not including the wind chill factor here in NYC. And i did not go outside to see the moon, it was just too cold. :laughing7:
Tony, Frozen in NYC

Its 70 degrees here in Texas right now. :rocker:
-
Our Tampa Bay temps now are upper 40s and falling. Might just hit upper 30's by midnight. Yup its definitely winter in Florida too.
Wheelz, Tampa Bay
-
Balmy here, downright balmy!
-
We saw -11 here last night but the clear air allowed for a great view of the lunar eclipse. Tonight we're going for -6, Wednesday we're off to Florida and hopefully some warm weather on the volleyball court.
-
Dear Chuck, Tony, EZ Cool, Dennis, Jim, Kevin, and mid-60s Buick owners who pay attention to the weather,
-18 degrees for us this morning.
. . . .
Here in California we are in a mid-winter heatwave after a previous week of cool and wet weather. There is a ridge of high pressure to our east which means the winds blow from land to shore and compress along the way. That warms things up. The nights are cold (lower 40s) but we are expected to get into the lower 60s by the end of the week. Last Saturday we reached 65? F.
It was really super cool viewing the Super Blood Wolf Moon at midnight.
Well I did try, but most of our eclipse was "liquid" in variety as we had one last round of rain. We even had a bit of icy eclipse - hail! I had hoped to get my camera out and catch something, but cameras and rain don't mix! :laughing7:
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:
-
Im in California and I'm freezing. 20 degs in the morning. Last week it rained for 4 days.
-
Tonight we've moved on to freezing rain and snow. But it's supposed to rise above freezing tomorrow before dipping into single digits this weekend again. I liked the mild January a few weeks ago better!!
Chuck

Winter is setting in strong up here in minnesota .
Temps this week for friday and saturday might get above 0 for the high and calling for -20 over nights .BRRRRRRR
My outdoor wood boiler looks like an old steam engine leaving the station .

Dear mid-60s Buick owners in the Midwest,
The Monterey office of the National Weather Service tacked this curious paragraph to the end of this morning's forecast discussion:
One final addition - If you`re a weather nut watch the weather over the Mid West the next week or two. Two solid pushes of arctic air will cause temperatures and wind chills to plummet. The overall anomalies with these airmasses are off the chart and will be the coldest season.
You can read up some more on what's coming on this report from the national office:
https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd (https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd)
So if you haven't taken all precautions against the cold - time's a wastin'! . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/freezing.gif)
Do let the rest of us know how cold it actually gets in your corner of the country!
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Yep, headed for a cold snap of below zero weather. At least winter is half over.
-
Sundogs were out today too.
-
Nice picture Jim. Does that signify anything weather wise ?
In Green Bay we’re headed for a low of minus 6 and a high tomorrow of 2. And it gets worse after that - lots worse.
Dan
-
Lows in the single digits here this weekend, but brutal with sub-zero temps next week. Glad to hear winter is half over!! :hello2:
:cheers2:

Hey Dan... where in GB are ya? We are right on the lake at Two Rivers... Its kinda odd that it can be zero and lake effect snow by the foot. Anywhere else would be too cold for snow. Even the snowblower runs on 10W oil. Ahhh... but the new shop with a 100K furnace and being totally insulated doesnt stop Buick fun!
Theres so much stuff to clean, prep and paint, I dont know where to begin; so I "putz"... $30 worth of paint stuff at menards today! ws

Dear Jim, Dan, Chuck, Bill, and mid-60s Buick owners where it gets really chilly! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/freezing.gif)
Sundogs were out today too.
Thanks for the photo! Your photo is as good as the ones you'll find on Wikipedia!
Nice picture Jim. Does that signify anything weather wise ?
Here is the definitive description from Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog)
Basically it requires a particular sort of ice crystal suspended at a particular altitude. So - surprise! - it means the air is very cold! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/freezing.gif)
So if you didn't know that, would you feel any warmer? . . . :icon_scratch:
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Stay warm Dan... Its -6 here at 0500hrs! ws

Dear mid-60s Buick owners were things really chill out!
The National Weather Service is close to shouting the alarm about the arctic air headed for the Midwest and Eastern parts of the country. Here is the latest short term discussion:
https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/pmdspd.html (https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/pmdspd.html)
So if the arctic blast is headed your way - definitely brace for it!
Cheers, Edouard
-
It?s on now! May hit over 20 below tomorrow night with much colder windchill.
-
We are suffering here in Oregon as well
-
Hi everyone, NYC will be getting the arctic blast starting on Wednesday going thru Saturday with the wind chill it will be well below zero..time for some antifreeze :cheers2:
-
Dear Jim, Bob, Tony, and 65GS.com experts on "antifreeze," . . . .
It?s on now! May hit over 20 below tomorrow night with much colder windchill.
Oddly enough, your post Jim has a question mark instead of the apostrophe in It's at least on my Mac anyway.
We are suffering here in Oregon as well
For some definition of "suffering." :icon_scratch: What happened? Are you going to have to mow the lawn or something! :laughing7:
Hi everyone, NYC will be getting the arctic blast starting on Wednesday going thru Saturday with the wind chill it will be well below zero..time for some antifreeze
Now that's a timely suggestion! So long as you mean the alcohol-based variety :cheers2: instead of the glycol type! :laughing7:
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Here’s a first, at least for me, mail delivery has been cancelled due to the cold weather. Air temp is minus 19 but the wind chill is minus 47. Think I’ll stay inside today. :tongue3:
Dan
-
Same first for us here in SW Michigan. We have a mere -11 with -36 wind chill this morning. And, being the smart people that we are, we're also staying home!!
Stay warm all! Ply liberal amounts of antifreeze if necessary!
:cheers2:

Shut down like the government! -24 here right now! Yuck! Think spring and warm thoughts driving our Buick’s
-
-27 here, -51 wind chill. Hondacar started and is running for the cross town trip to Brooklyn Park.
Postal service cancelled here as well, school has been cancelled all week so far.
Mark
-
Same here. Wife?s Dodge started and she went to work. Company car Ford will not start., working on it.
-
-29 up here , who gives a BLEEP what the wind chill is at this point . Its so cold we can't even get Email . :laughing7:
-
Was +22 here in NC when I left for work at 7am. Supposed to get down to 17 tonight.
-
Well it is definitely cold here in Nebraska also. With minus temps overnight and single digits today. Postal service is cancelled as is school in Lincoln. But..., school in the rural areas just had a late start. Makes me wonder about those city folks and how hardy they are. LOL
Stay warm all,
Loren
-
It made minus 20F today. Winds-a-howlin' and moving snow on its own. Plus the town is "helping out". Local fish tug is breaking ice today to prevent ice jam up river. No Buick fun for a few days. Anyone see a 455 manual trans flywheel go blowing by??? ws
-
Today was a nice "crisp and clear" northern Wisconsin day; just a little cool and breezy, as in 40 mph sustained breezes... ws

All
At my house on the North side I match Mark Ascher who is on the South side of the Twin Cities this morning.
My house in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota was -35 this morning with -60 windchill.
Expect to break a 130 yr low record Thursday morning.
It hasn't been this cold since winter of 1995-96.
Remember your mother told you not to stick your wet tongue on the flag pole in this kind of weather.

It's not bad here in eastern Pa, it just dipped below zero for the first time this season. Tonight and tomorrow will be the coldest then a warmup into the 50's is expected next week along with some rain.
I can't imagine trying to live where it gets as cold as some of you are experiencing! The coldest I experienced was a Vermont ski trip I did with a bunch of friends. It was 18 below in the morning. We watched the Weather channel for a few hours then finally ventured out when it warmed up to 12 below. The skiing wasn't too bad but the chairlift ride to the top was brutal....windchill was somewhere around 30 below. After 2 runs we headed over to the gondula lift... and quite a few bar breaks to warm up.
Are houses out your way built to handle these temps? And how does the wildlife cope with this cold?
Hang in there.... better times are coming.
-
Walt , most of the houses are suited for the cold weather up here in MN . That being said there are some issues that pop up , like septic systems freezing up which my sisters did today . Some of the mobile home or trailer houses will have water lines freeze if they aren't properly insulated , I know a few people that live up here in them and they will simply let they're faucets drip slowly to prevent them from freezing up .
When its EXTREMELY cold like it is tonight ( 35 - 40 below ) even stranger things happen like this morning Excel gas company called all there customers in our area and asked everyone to turn there thermostats down to 63 because of a strain on there gas usage . Which makes NO SENSE to me at all .
There was quite a few houses that didn't have enough gas pressure and they lost heat around our neighborhood .
We weren't one of them . I have in floor heat in our house and one of my pole barns that is heated with an outdoor wood boiler , it is equipped with a natural gas back up and works very nice .
Anyway hope everyone stays warm .

This is the official longer range forecast. Its pretty user friendly so have a look around... ws

It is now 4 with a wind chill of -15 here in NYC. My GMC truck started so i drove the boys to school so they did not have to walk in the cold. The day is off to a good start. :thumbsup:Tony
-
John, you're not alone in being asked to reduce thermostats by the gas company. Except here, Consumers Energy made the plea to drop stats to no more than 65 because of the combination of extreme demand and a fire at one of their facilities yesterday. Not a good combination!
Only -18 with -37 wind chill here this morning. I'd love to have that natural gas, but it's not available here, so I'm hoping the propane holds out until the next delivery. The propane company manages that automatically, but I'm going to monitor it myself and make a plea if needed.
Then, this weekend, the temps warm up and we're supposed to have heavy rain and flooding. The ground's frozen hard with 8-12" of snow on top. The heavy rain melts the snow, but the frozen ground can't absorb it. I'll probably be putting my wet vac into duty in the basement again :angry9:
Stay warm and keep your cool!
:cheers2:

Somethings wrong when it’s ‘only’ -18. Its ‘only’ -23 in GB. Not looking forward to our next utility bill but at least no ones asking us to turn down the thermostats.
Sure hope your propane holds out and the basement stays dry.

-28 this morning here.
-
All
-30 at the house this morning.
-38 at the lake.
Big improvement in windchill not so bad.
We live rural not in town so we utilize backup plans.
7 acres of trees for fire wood.
Use natural gas but have 2 fireplaces for backup and recreational use.
Spare generator for power failure as long as you have fuel to run it and test it regularly.
Have large hot water heater and can fill up two bath tubs if looking bad.
Have well and septic. They have never frozen but there is always a first time. 5 gal bucket with cover for real emergency.
Heated garage to improve chances of vehicle starting. New vehicle are even known to have issues.
Farm tractor with 5’ snow blower and loader to get out of 1/4 mile long driveway.
Fortunately this level of weather typically doesn't last long or often.
It’s just Mother Nature reminding us who the real boss is.
If I think about all this my working wife can set in her office at home talking working and communicating with people all over the world without having to brave the elements unless she chooses to. How times have changed.

Dear 65GS.com members who plan for the weather as best they can,
One of the other hats I wear is as the owner of a Personal Weather Station. One thing lead to another and eventually I stumbled across the National Weather Service Climate Predication Center:
https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ (https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/)
They provide longer range forecasts than you'll find with the caveat they are only claiming trends with respect to the climate. Still that can be good enough to make some plans that you might not otherwise be able to make. They made a 1 month prediction for the temperature and precipitation. I thought I would share the forecasts for March since folks here might want to know what the best prognostications are proposing. Here is the departure from normal temperature forecast for March:
Sadly the blue says it all. The expectation is colder than normal forecasts for a wide part of the country. Here is the precipitation forecast:
The one month forecast is not as reliable as the 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks. However, at the moment they are similar. These are forecasts at the edge of what can be done, but it still gives you some indication of what to expect in your part of the country. Whether you like it or not, it is better to plan for the worse than be unaware and be sorry.
So FYI . . . . . . .
Edouard

Thanks Edouard, I saw the forecast for my region (NE) and it's going to be very cold the next two weeks. Plus we are expecting a big snowfall this Sunday into Monday. How much snow ? The forecasters will not say yet ! So it could be a big one.. That's OK because my Boys will go out to shovel while I do some inside projects...
:hello: Stay warm everyone.

I’m fed up with the snow and wind.

Dear Tony, Jim, and 65GS.com members who are "gettin' a little weary" of ol' man Winter,
That's a horribly graphic photo you've got there Jim! . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/freezing.gif)
I started to keep an eye on these extended climate forecasts because of all the drought miseries in California. However, even California is getting plenty weary of all da' wet. Still, whatever the situation, I prefer to know what is likely to occur. Planning for bad weather is better than just having it hit you cold.
Hang in there as best you can gang!
Cheers, Edouard
