Title: 2019 Hot Rod Power Tour
Post by: dsags on January 15, 2019, 04:41:37 PM
The Hot Rod Power Tour is headed to Sparta, Ky; Indianapolis, IN; Fort Wayne, IN; and ends up in Norwalk, OH. Seems like a great opportunity for a midwestern 65GS get together(s).

The dates are June 11,12,13 and 14 respectively. Time to start planning.

https://www.hotrod.com/events/power-tour/ (https://www.hotrod.com/events/power-tour/) As a warning, hotel rooms sell out fast.

It appears that the route ‘may’ go from Fort Wayne to Norwalk via Defiance.

Dan, we are planning on going those days. Will keep you posted. For those who have never driven on the Power Tour, it is an event you should try to do. Great people and great cars makes for a great time! The Power Tour is a Wow, like traveling back in time.

Jim and I are planning on meeting the tour in Indy and then going to Fort Wayne. May head home from Fort Wayne - it’s uncertain at this time. Have reservations at the Best Western Luxbury Inn. Based on when Loren and I went in 2017 motels get sold out fast.

Maybe we could have a get together in Fort Wayne June 13 or 14.

In Indianapolis we have reservations at the Best Western Plus Atrea Inn & Suites. Not sure if there are any rooms left there or not. It’s about 17 miles south of Lucas Oil Raceway just off I-70.

Planning on going to Ft. Wayne to watch the cars come in on Thursday and to join the group from Ft. Wayne to Norwalk on Friday. Easy route to follow. Once you are on Hwy 6 it is straight shot to Fremont. Hwy 6 is a two track with a lot of semi traffic. They use it to bypass the turnpike. You can ride behind one for miles till you get a chance to pass, but must do the speed limit or better. Can't think of a park along the way, but there are a lot of places where you can pull off and watch they go by.

Along the way might want to check out Snook"s Dream Cars, Bowling Green Ohio. !/4 mile off Hwy 6. First left after you cross under I-75 on
Hwy 6. Nice collection of cars and memorabilia. Not much Buick but still interesting.

I'm planning to be there as well with the red 65 GS.  Hoping for good weather and that the car endures its first road trip since she joined our family.

I agree it would be nice to figure out a place to meet and watch the cars arrive....

The parking lot for the coliseum is quite large. I would think that we should be able to park in the lot and watch the cars come in.

The cars coming from Indy will be taking the I-469 bypass to I-69 south to the Coldwater Rd. exit. There are several areas along Coldwater where we may be able to park and watch the cars come in. I drive Coldwater Rd everyday on my parts run and will check it out. At that point we are less then a mile from the tour parking area. The area I am thinking about would give us a place to park and a grass area to sit. I am sure we are the only ones thinking along these lines. LOL.

Washout day at the HRPT in Ft. Wayne today.  Rain, high winds, etc.  Most went to their hotels.  Even some of the vendors were packing up.  Tomorrow should be much better for the last leg of the tour to Norwalk, OH.  Sunny and mid-70s forecast.  Looking forward to it!

The old GS ran fine on the trip from Michigan and only had a few leaks in the rain.  Fewer than I expected.

Good to see Glenn, Kevin and Angie here and to meet Harle for the first time.  He has quite a unique 65 GS!  Hoping to meet up with Jim later.

A few picture attached.

What a difference a day makes.  Today was gorgeous...sunny, dry, warm but not hot.  A great day for a cruise!  Met Kevin, Angie and Glenn in Edgerton, Ohio and watched the cars go by.  A very large variety of cars...originals, restorations, rat rods, modern performance cars.  Then we left and followed Kevin and Angie continuing the tour to near Napoleon, Ohio.  Waited through several one-lane areas of the highway and even a wait for cleanup of a motorcycle accident.  But made it just fine to Norwalk.  What a blast to join others on the tour.  And really fun to watch many people line the road in their lawn chairs, waving and smiling ear to ear.  Living vicariously!!

More to come.....

Spent the afternoon at the Summit Motorsport Park in Norwalk, the last stop on this year's HRPT.  Saw lots of cool cars, watched drag races (including some old Buicks), and watched a Burnout competition.  The Burnout competition was won by an 18 year old from Michigan in a 1972 GMC pickup that he and his dad had built.  He said that he had just graduated from High School and this was his Senior Trip.  He was pretty excited about it and it was great to see a member of the younger generation so excited about the cars that we love.  Maybe there's hope for the love of these cars to continue!

Also saw a couple of Skylarks on the grounds as we were leaving.  Didn't see them on the road, but glad to see more Buicks!

Heading home tomorrow and expecting more rain along the way, but even so, today made it all worthwhile!!

Even the rain didn’t dampen spirits; the fun of going to lunch as a group made up for it. Glenn (AKA Tour Guide) picked the best restaurant in Fort Wayne, food service and conversation where excellent..

Even when the traffic backed up there was ample entertainment, lots of line locks and static burnouts.

The road warrior award goes to Chuck, he drove his seldom driven classic many miles through miserable weather and stop and stop then go traffic.

Got home around 2 today. The 65 performed flawlessly and covered 1,653 miles this week! Did have one near miss as a lady cut in front of me on the way home in some small town. Locked up the drums with about a foot to spare, pretty close.

Dear Jim and mid-60s Buick road warriors,

Got home around 2 today. The 65 performed flawlessly and covered 1,653 miles this week!

Glad your 65 performed so well!  Biquette definitely still has some shakedown issues to be resolved before undertaking that sort of a road trip.

Did have one near miss as a lady cut in front of me on the way home in some small town. Locked up the drums with about a foot to spare, pretty close.

Glad it was only a near miss.  Alas people's attitudes toward cars has changed and this in part has made them more bold.  It definitely discourages me from taking Biquette as much as I would like to.

Glad you and Buick are home safe and sound!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

After logging over 500 miles in the Steve Shuman convertible, returned home yesterday morning before 10:00 am.  The car did fine until I got home and popped the hood to check fluids and found power steering fluid all over.  Apparently, on the last leg of the trip the high pressure fitting on the back of the pump decided to leak.  Got it off and found the O-ring mangled.  Ordered a new seal kit and hope to have it ready to be washed and road worthy again by Wednesday.

I was really pleased with how well the car ran after not being driven any distance for about 15 years.  The top leaked a bit in the rains, but not as much as I had feared.  Very pleased and had a ball on that last leg of the Power Tour!

Happy Fathers Day!!

Sounds like a blast! When you do that pump Chuck, make sure you replace the O ring between the pump and the case; its under where the high pressure fitting enters the sheet metal housing.

Glad everyone made it safer and sound!  Bill
