Found some vintage Popular Science & Popular Mechanics magazines while cleaning out moms house.
I don't about the Buick 400 being based on the Olds 400 though.... :nono:

Mark, that statement is false to me. I've never heard that before, :icon_scratch: the basic Nailhead block came out in 53 with 264 Ci then was increased thru the years to 322,364,401, then 425 and in all of my years with the ROA & BCA I have never heard that it was related to an Olds motor at all. If I'm wrong please advise.

In addition to the obvious differences in the Buick and Olds engines (blocks, heads, valvetrain, etc.) remember that this was in the days of very independent GM divisions. And very competitive. Way before GM would have tooled the same engine for use in multiple division models. I'm confident in saying " Didn't happen"!!!! In those days, a Buick was a Buick, was a Buick, was not an Oldsmobile. And vice versa, of course!

That statement at the top of the last page of the article is wrong.
Norbye and Dunne were usually pretty good getting the tech right, at least from what I remember.

I think that is a typo in the article. They put Oldsmobile instead of Buick. The 400 in the GS is a derivative of the new Buick 425. 425 Buick came out offically in 64, so it was still relatively new at this time.

Actually the 425 was available in '63. The Roxy's '63 Riviera has it's original 425 in it.

Yep, I have seen a 63 wildcat with a 425. But it was a late model year introduction and did not show up in the Buick litetature til 64. So it was "official" in 64.

Those magazines are very cool to see again! My father subscribed those magazines, as well as Mechanix Illustrated throughout the sixties and into the early seventies. I would often read them before he got to heh heh heh
Used to love reading Tom MacCahill's road test reports. He had such a way with words.
