Title: License plate bracket finish
Post by: Mark Ascher on November 10, 2009, 09:53:27 PM
What is the correct finish for the rear license plate bracket? I bought a Fusick repro, which is black, but the original looks galvanized or maybe even gray phosphate? I tried to find NOS, but that proved hopeless. The Fusick version is nice, but I want to make it as close to original as possible. Any thoughts?

Mark, your guess is as good as mine. My originals are grey. I think it's grey phosphate. Gold Cad degrades to a grey color too, but the finish looks grey under the rubber bumpers too.

Doug @ the Buick Farm did have some 66-67 NOS pieces a few years ago. He may know.

I did find a source for DIY phosphating! I want to give it a try:

I read about it on one of the Camaro forums.....I was just doing restoration research, honest!

I am pretty certain it is galvanized--they hold up too well over the years to just be silver cad plating.

Walt & Brian,

Thanks for the info! I think I'm just going to have it phosphated, although it sure looks galvanized. I don't know where to get that done.

Walt, the Camaro Research Group online has tons of fascinating GM info. I admit, I've spent a lot of time there.
