Title: A few curious parts listings on eBay
Post by: elagache on December 04, 2017, 11:05:58 AM
Dear mid-60s Buick owners always on the watch for unique parts,

This morning's check of eBay yielded the chrome Rivera air cleaner listed once more:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1966-Buick-Nailhead-Dual-Quad-2x4-Air-Cleaner-401-425-Riviera-GS-Rare/122841621374 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1966-Buick-Nailhead-Dual-Quad-2x4-Air-Cleaner-401-425-Riviera-GS-Rare/122841621374)

However, there were two items that at least appear to me to be perhaps in error.  The first a 1964 only power steering pump:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Buick-Skylark-power-steering-pump-RARE-64-ONLY/132421704176 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Buick-Skylark-power-steering-pump-RARE-64-ONLY/132421704176)

Is it really true that the 1964 power steering pumps were unique?

The other item is a rare (if true) rear bumper for a 1964-65 Buick A-body wagon:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-64-buick-sportwagon-special-olds-vista-cruiser-wagon-rear-bumper-f85/202135136940 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-64-buick-sportwagon-special-olds-vista-cruiser-wagon-rear-bumper-f85/202135136940)

Looking at the pictures it does look like the wagon bumper.  However, the description reads:

"Used rear bumper core. This can be used on a car or wagon. It does come with a fold down license plate .  it does have some dents and scratches . it also has surface rust on the back side. No rust holes."

A fold down license plate?  On a wagon?

A few curiosities for the 65GS.com community to ponder . . . .  :icon_scratch:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Hi,

Neat finds, not sure on the 64 pump, I know early 65 and later 65/66 were different, the early 65 fill was taller where the later 65/66 were short, if you look at a few 65 Gran Sports and compare the PS pump to the build date you will notice the difference, but not sure on 64, betting they all function the same, more ascetics and depending on how correct a restoration you are going for.  For that matter all the 64 Skylarks I have see all look similar to a early 65 unit but never go more specific than the fill tube height.

Regards,

When I was working on my 64 Lesabre Wagon I found out the PS shaft was a different diameter than on my 65's.  Otherwise identical looks.
Maybe just the shaft diameter makes it a different part number.

Hi again,

Yeah there is different shaft diameters, the 225/300 pump shaft does differ from a nailhead 401/425, but the resviour or housing is interchangeable.

Title: But what about the bumper! (Re: A few curious parts listings on eBay)

Dear Jim, Ted, and mid-60s Buick parts experts,

Okay, okay, I'll buy your expertise on the power steering pump.  But a wagon bumper with the gas filler cap behind the rear license plate?  :icon_scratch:

I'm personally quite happy with the gas filler door on the side of my trusty wagon!

64 has a larger diameter shaft on the PS pump, but it can be used on a 65-66 if you use the 64 pulley with it as well.  I know because I have done it before!  Jim is also correct about the height of the filler neck--64 and early 65 had the taller fill neck, then when the GS came out, the pump with the shorter filler neck was introduced presumably due to hood clearance on the 401 engine in the Skylark GS.

I have one of each in my two 65 Gran Sports and no hood clearance issue with the taller pump.  I thought they were simply produced by different GM suppliers, and used interchangeably.  Apparently not.....??

I have seen both used on the Gran Sports.

Here are a couple of pictures I have on file of the tall neck pump on '65 Gran Sports.

So, curiosity got me looking through the pictures of my first GS.  It too has the long neck.
The GS parts chassis I brought back from  Charlotte, NC area many years ago also had the long neck and our Champagne Mist GS does as well.

Here is a picture of my first GS and the PS pump, that got me into '65 Gran Sports over 30 years ago.   :BangHead:

Maybe an issue of assembly plants? My convertible has the short style and is a Flint car.(Non a/c)

Here is another theory--look at a car like Mark Ascher's with the CA emissions. The snorkel points to the drivers side and right into that PS pump neck.  Could it have something to do with that?  Maybe the change was to accommodate the CA emissions?   On another note, every 66 GS or regular Skylark/Specia I have ever seen has the short neck pump.
