Dear mid-60s Buick "long-roof" fans,
What better way to get this topic underway than to post some photos of our favorite mid-60s Buick wagon (and perhaps a few others types as well.) Okay, I'll start with one of my favorite photos my trusty wagon:
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Biquette/Photos-of-Biquette/Biquettes-Jan-1-2016-outing/i-PL3tHtC/0/f7287ed6/XL/Biquette%20next%20to%20caboose%20-%20front-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Biquette/Photos-of-Biquette/Biquettes-Jan-1-2016-outing/i-PL3tHtC/A)
So who's got a nice wagon photo that they would be willing to share! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/kodak.gif)
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Here's a '67 that was at the Milwaukee BCA meet. Sweet car in the lightly modified class.

Ok, I can't resist. Here is a picture of my favorite long-roof wagon!

And this is #2.

Dear Dan, Brian, and mid-60s Buick owners who are also long-roof fans!
Thanks for sharing all the neat pictures! I decided to go through my photo archives to see if I could dredge up something new. I found this photo taken in the late 1980s of my wagon in her role as "astro-mobile."
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Biquette/Photos-of-Biquette/Biquette-misc-photos/i-hc32hwp/0/a759b52f/XL/8%22%20Newtonian-Cassegrain%20telescope-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Biquette/Photos-of-Biquette/Biquette-misc-photos/i-hc32hwp/A)
In those days I was hauling a good sized telescope (the one on the left,) away from the city lights to get decent star-gazing conditions. Both telescopes are of an unusual Newtonian-Cassegrain convertible design. By substituting a mirror you could switch from telescope with a wide field of view (for say star clusters,) to a telescope with high magnification (good for viewing planets.) I met the fellow with the telescope on the right and so impressed with the design that I copied it in a slightly smaller size.
Hanging on the driver's side window is a power distribution box that I made to power the telescope motor, a stereo, and stuff like that. It is plugged into the cigarette lighter and added another fuse for safety.
Keep d'em long-roof photos comin'! :icon_thumright:
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:
P.S. if you look carefully in between the telescopes is a folding table which has a propane stove on it. Even in the wilderness you cannot wake up without a cup of coffee! In those days I would sleep in the cargo area once the observing session was done. This "could be" why I have developed a real interest in a travel trailer!! :laughing7:

Dear mid-60s Buick "long-roof" fans,
The Hemmings Blog is featuring this 1949 De Soto DeLuxe station wagon (https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2017/11/13/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1949-de-soto-deluxe-station-wagon/) from the Hemmings automobile advertisements:

It isn't a Buick wagon, but it sure is a beautiful example of a woody wagon from the 1940s. Want it? You'd better have deep pockets to cover the $105,000 asking price! Fortunately, looking at pictures remains - as always - free!
Enjoy! Edouard

Dear Michael, Chuck, and mid-60s Buick "long-roof" fans,
Post of pictures of your favorite long-roof wagon!
Awe shucks! THANKS! :hello2:
My favorite long-roof wagon. I've had a few and this is by far my favorite!
(http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/wink.gif) . . . With all due respect, I think I'll stick to Michael's proclamation. While you may really like it. . . . Honestly, I think it is a bit fibbin' to call it a real "long-roof." The point is obvious enough - the roof isn't long enough! :laughing7:
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Well, it might not be long ENOUGH, but you have to admit, it is long! :laughing7:

Dear Chuck, Kevin, Jim. and mid-60s Buick long-roof fans, . . .
Well, it might not be long ENOUGH, but you have to admit, it is long! :laughing7:
(http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/wink.gif) . . . . Sure! It isn't long enough to be a real wagon! It is only long enough to be one of those vehicles that are only worthy of three letters: SUV! . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/Laughing_LOL.gif)

Okay, you've got my trusty wagon's horsepower beaten by about 50 horsepower. But I don't know if that engine can produce as much torque. Also, it is about a 1000 pounds heavier than my wagon - oddly enough. I don't have any statistics about interior room, but comparing the Automotive Catalog - here is my wagon:
http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1965/300515/buick_special_deluxe_station_wagon_300_v-8_super_turbine.html (http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1965/300515/buick_special_deluxe_station_wagon_300_v-8_super_turbine.html)
and here is the CTS-V:
http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/2011/1613780/cadillac_cts-v_sport_wagon_automatic.html (http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/2011/1613780/cadillac_cts-v_sport_wagon_automatic.html)
The total interior room is about the same. The CTS is: 96.3 cu ft while a 1965 Buick Special wagon is a bit larger at: 99.9 cu ft. I couldn't find any info on the CTS's towing capacity. The goal is to get my wagon able to handle as much as a 6000 pound trailer. I don't know if the CTS could cope with that.
Besides the Buick?s I really like the 55-59 Ford Ranch Wagons and Del Rios. Friend has one but I can?t get the pic to post.
Well we'll need to do something about that! Are the pictures too large or something?

Yes, but the more important three letters are SRT, not SUV!
Only 475 HP and 425 ft/lbs, but almost as quick as the CTS-V. 4.4 second 0-60, 12.9 second quarter mile. But here's the kicker....8700 lb GVW towing capacity. Very nice for towing a 65 GS in an enclosed trailer!
Cheers!

You might be surprised to learn that Buick rated the 1965 Sportwagon to tow a class 3 trailer (3500-5000 lbs GTW) even if it was only available with the 300 cid V-8. The catch was that they specified a 3.90:1 rear end for that sort of service. Driving a Sportwagon on the freeway without an overdrive must have been very loud and frustrating even without a trailer.
Still, if you are willing to upgrade your drive-train, it is certainly possible to haul around your 1965 GS using a 1965 Buick wagon. Arthur Throckmorton upgraded a 1965 Buick Special wagon with a 455 Buick big-block and used it to haul his 1968 GS from Nevada to the Grand Nationals in Tennessee and back. He even put up a photo album of his "adventures."

My trusty wagon "restro-mod" was very much an attempt to replicate the success that Arthur achieved, while carefully upgrading the systems that gave Arthur trouble on his epic journey.

Dear Ted and mid-60s Buick "long-roof" fans,

Let me guess - a 1964 Buick Estate wagon? There is a nice write-up on one in the October 2017 issue of the Buick Bugle.
Special Size:

There were 2 64 Estate Wagons in Brookfield, both restified with Super WIldcat engines...
This one was born with Super Wildcat and 4- note horns. "just needs paint" :headbang:
Don't worry, for the Special I saved the V6, dog dish wheels and flat hood to put it back stock someday :idea1:

Ted, I wouldn?t change that red one at all, it looks great! Well, maybe I would change one thing? put my name on the title.😀😀

Dear Ted, Jim, and mid-60s Buick long-roof with nailheads fans,
There were 2 64 Estate Wagons in Brookfield, both restified with Super WIldcat engines...
Huh? (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/huh_sign.gif) I thought the 1964 estate wagon at least could come with the nailhead as an factory option. The reason the 1964 estate wagon caught my eye in the October Buick Bugle magazine is that it was bought to tow an . . . . . Airstream travel trailer! . . . :love4:
So what do you mean "restified with Super WIldcat engines" :icon_scratch:
Don't worry, for the Special I saved the V6, dog dish wheels and flat hood to put it back stock someday :idea1:
(http://http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/wink.gif) . . . So when you go back to the V-6 and the flat hood, can I take your air scoop hood to put on my wagon!? . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/Laughing_LOL.gif)
Actually no nead. I have already started to "scheme" about hood scoops for my trusty wagon. (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/mischief.gif) Alas it is so much easier to come up with an idea then to to come up with an implementation that will actually work. "Translation": Restored with Super Wildcat engines. The Super Wildcat is a 425 nailhead with dual quads and a bit more spark advance. And dress up items like the cast aluminum script "Buick" valve covers and chrome "Super Wildcat" air cleaner. Just little more "go" to help tow that Airstream!
A great weekend to all!

I see! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/bouncey.gif) Sounds like a darn good idea for any wagon that might be pulling an Airstream (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/goodjob_sign.gif)

Awe shucks! Just because you want a 2-door wagon doesn't mean you have to stoop to a Chebby name-plate. Instead why don't you get one of these!
(https://bangshift.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/buick2.jpg) (https://bangshift.com/bangshift1320/someone-hand-built-two-door-1965-buick-sportwagon-hard-top-now-can-buy/)

There are at least 2 of these hand-built 2-door Buick Sportwagons out there. This one has the small-block chevy drive train. The other one has the turbo V-6 from a Buick Grand National. They do come up for sale from time to time, but the builders never seem to find a buyer willing to give them what the builders want.
At least looking is free! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/smiley.gif)
