Title: Front lower shock absorber nuts /clips
Post by: 35chevcoupe on February 09, 2017, 09:54:49 PM
Just wondering how the bottom of the shock is suppose to be fastened to the lower a frame ?
Bolt and nut , U clip , mine had a mixture of things .
My car had 2 of the captured nut clips pictured . They seem like a good fit but don,t know if they are oem.

John,

Those clips look OEM to me. You need 4 of them. They may be listed on the AMK hardware list, which should be on this site,
but I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure where. I can always email it to you.
4 clips and 4 bolts which should also be on the AMK list.

Mark , didn't see them at AMK .   They had the u clip that is threaded but not the captured not type .
Ill keep looking in my buckets of bolts .   I did find another one so now I only need 1 more .

John,

I got them from NAPA, but that was 28 years ago.  Probably still available since they were used on Chevy's too.

Loren ,  28 years ago !!!   You can still remember that !   Sometimes I can,t remember what I did yesterday .
I was going to see if you had a left front brake backing plate  :sleepy2:   OH WAIT  , Already did that . LOL
Any way I did find a few more clips , went through my stash of lower A frames  ( about 8 sets ) and found 3 more .  ( Even found an old grey spiral shock )

Speaking of brake backing plates, did the '65 GS use the same pn as the Skylark?
My '66 parts book shows 54644743 and -742 for Special-Skylark and 547812 and -811 for GS.
IIRC, the rear plates became thicker sometime during the 66 production year. I'm unsure when the fronts changed.

Shock nuts.... they look like the ones in my '66. Except mine were the green phosphate color. Yours look black.

Walt , the clips I have I didn't see any color on them . The ones pictured were ran through my tumbler , so they are kind of a grey color .
But now that you mention it I kind of remember those clips being a greenish or blueish color back in the day .

Not sure on the backing plate thing . It wouldn,t be because the GS had bigger inside diameter wheel cylinders would it ?

My Buick parts book shows fronts to be the same for Special-Skylark-Gran Sport.

Found the pic of the clips and bolts from my '66. There's a little green or blue paint visible on them.

Walt , thanks for the photo .   I,m surprised those are the same bolts I have too. I was going to replace those bolts with some bolts that didn't have a floating washer but I guess I won,t .  Now I just need to figure out a color to paint them .
