Kind of wondering if I did good on this purchase. It's a 64 skylark with original 300 engine and 4 berral carb.
The car is clean rust free from what I can see. Looks like it has new brakes shocks and bushings. And a fresh paint job that is horrible. I could have done better in my garage. Interior needs work, under the hood is clean. I paid $2000 and it runs and drives besides the jump starting of the battery. And I can't post pictures right now
-
If it is rust free the body shell is worth what you paid! Is there any missing trim? Some of it is 1964 skylark only! and a challenge to find in
nice shape! I have some parts for a 64!
-
Where are you located Chuck? I have a 64 Skylark in my garage too. Restored it back in the mid 90's.
-
I'm in Boise Idaho. Here was the listing, http://boise.craigslist.org/cto/5454225794.html (http://boise.craigslist.org/cto/5454225794.html)

That looks like a really nice car! I can set you up with a nice set of the factory 64 Skylark spinner hubcaps for it if you are interested. I managed to find NOS ones for my car when I restored it, so the originals are hanging on the wall in my garage collecting dust.
-
Looks like you got a good deal! Welcome aboard!
-
I would defanitly be interested in the hub caps. The tires on this car look cheap but they are brand new.
Don't know what direction I wanna go with this car. Would it be wrong to pull the factory numbers matching 300 4 barrel and transmission and throw a big block 455, remove all the trim, fill and paint it. Or should I keep this car completely factory? Is worth any thing more either way?
-
Value always depends on who the buyer is and how bad they want it! It could go either way on the value if you change the engine. I personally recommend you keep the 300 4bbl. They are really strong running engines. With some mild head porting, bigger exhaust, and a performance cam, you will be surprised how good it will run. The 300 is light too since it has aluminum heads and intake. The 64 with the 300 engine is the most well balanced weight distribution of all the Buick A-body V8 cars due to that.
One thing you need to know up front--the 64 engine mounts are unique to the 64 model only and no longer available. You can pretty much guarantee yours are bad and if not broken yet, will be soon if you drive it hard. You can replace the rubber mounts on the engine with the 65-67 mounts, but you also have to change the pedestal on the frame that the mount sits on/bolts through to the 65-67 style. You will have to get the pedestals off a 65-67 parts car somewhere.
Hubcaps I have are like the ones in the picture of my car I posted. I will sell all four for $100 plus whatever the shipping is to you.

Dear Chuck 64, gssizzler, Brian, Jim, and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

Congratulations on your new baby!

It sounds like a decent project without too much work. It is too bad that somebody painted it badly. Better to have left it alone than to do that.
And I can't post pictures right now
Can you tell us what's your problem with posting photos? If you have any particular questions about the car as the old saying goes: "a picture is worth a thousand words."
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

"And I can't post pictures right now"
Check the picture size, there is a maximum size for each and a total maximum per post.

I don't have a computer and it says may pictures are in the wrong format when using phone or tablet

I'm thinking about doing a mini tub, suspension all around, big disc brake rotors, motor Trany and rear end. Turn this car into a street machine. Has anyone done this? Is there after market parts available?

I can't help with that one. I have a dumb phone and no tablet.
Hopefully one of the other board members will chime in.

Looking at the frame and wheel wells on this car it doesn't look like you can fit a 13" wide tire in the back without hacking the frame up and you will not gain anything by widening the wheel wells. Has anyone put a 13" wide tire on the back of a 64 skylark?
-
Can anyone tell me how rare the factory 300 4 barrel aluminum head option is? From what I understand they only made it the 1 year. I would hat to pull this thing out if it is going to lose value of the vehicle

A 275/60-15 has a section width of 11". What size tire are you thinking of putting on the car ?
Dan
-
A 275/60-15 is about the widest that will fit. Might have 1/2" clearance left until it starts rubbing.
-
I have a set of wheels and tires that won't fit. They are 335/40/20
-
3 options:
Air shocks
Mini tub the rear
Radius the rear wheel openings
A guy I knew many years ago raised the rear wheel openings on a 67 GTO to look stock but fit an N50 15 tire. Looked really cool.

Dear Chuck and mid-60s Buick experts,
Nobody replied to this one so I'll stake a stab at it and hope everyone else corrects any mistakes.

The 1964 300 cid V-8 had aluminum heads and intake manifolds - I believe all of them. I don't know how many of them had 4-barrel carbs versus 2-barrel. It is obvious that more of the 4-barrel have been preserved for obvious reasons.
What does the peanut galley say?

Boy do I have a lot of questions. Seams like there is not a lot of aftermarket support for this car. So what is the biggest tire wheel combo you can fit on the front and rear. I tried looking it up but I'm getting all kinds of different answers.

Dear Chuck and mid-60s Buick fans,

Sadly the earlier Buicks don't get a such interest so the reproduction parts are as numerous. Do you know "da' usual suspects" when it comes to Buick parts?

There are many smaller suppliers and lots of parts from other GM cars will fit. You need to ask these guys for specifics.

Unfortunately it depends on how bold you are. Guys are getting away with various 17" combos. Hopefully other guys will jump in on this one. Otherwise perhaps you should ask this question specifically in this topic:

Hang in there, it is a bit intimidating at first, but the 1964-65 Buicks are well-supported compared to many other Buicks.

A good place to start a search for parts suppliers is right on this site.

So today a spent a good amount of time going threw the whole car. Looks like both rear quarters have been rusted thruogh by the wheel opening lip and has been patched very poorly. Also the outer wheel house is completely rusted through. Now I can't seem to find any body part for this. No rear quart patch panels and no outer wheel house. There are inner wheel house options but that doesn't help me. What are my options? I really want to replace these parts instead of trying to patch these things up. Of course I'm sure I can do a lot better than the previous job. Now if I'm gonna do this I have also decided to replace the trunk pan and mini tub. So I need options for a complete trunk pan outer wheel house and rear quarter panels. I will use abc's mini tub inner wheel house kit. Please any help! Thank you
-
There is a company that makes lower rear quarters, but I've never seen one in person.
There has to be someone here who can direct you for the outer wheel house sections.
You can also repair quarters with pieces from from fenders.
Mark
-
Thanks! That's what I need. Now if I can find outer wheelhouse I will be set.
-
I'm thinking my only option is to modify 64 chevelle outer wheelhouse to fit or gto
-
That sounds like the way to go.

I just put a set of 17x8s on my 65 and have no issues. Its close but no contact. Tires are 245 wide and measured height is just under 26". BS was advertised at 4.5" but I measured it just a hair more than that but still close.
I know of one car that has fit 275/40/17s out back and it is very close but I think he has done a small bit of clearance work too. If I wanted to get every last mm of tread under the back with a perfect offset I could probably squeeze some 285 or 295 wide tires in back.
I have some pics up in another thread in introductions and new members area with a link to my pics. My car looks lowered, and it is, but its because the springs are worn out :BangHead: It is at very close to what I want the finished height to be so that good, its there for the wrong reasons though. Hope that helps some.

The 65 GTO outer wheel housings actually work better for this, you will
Have to cut them in 3 or 4 pieces and graph it into the lip!

Hey Chuck! Have I gotta deal for you!! SHort story:
Long time Buick Service Technician In Sarasota, from 1966 up till 2003 started building a monster 425, factory 2x4 setup, linkages, factory 425 pistons, special gound cam, serious head work and every little detail was performed under HIS Buick watchful eye technical supervision. He wasted NO EXPENSE on this motor and built it with the intent of droppin it into 1930 Ford pickup...
This motor has been run every month and has about 30 hours time, on an engine stand. The fello is elderly and decided to finish his 66 Chevelle SS 4 speed and this motor is gotta go. I have worked a fairly reasonable deal with him on the motor AND 3 complete 4 speed Buick consolettes w/tachs... I am making monthly payments on the motor and should have it here in a few weeks.
I have a vid of it running if you want to hear it... Email me.
Here is a pix:
This motor would make an awesome sleeper candidate for your car... behind a tremec 5 speed..... Posi, and Budnik ICE 18" wheels....ooooooyaeeah.
Anyway, contact me if interested.
PM sent!

Just a little update. I ended up selling 64 skylark because there was just to much body damage and there is no good option for quarter panels for that car. I made $700 profit on the car and went out and bought a 66 skylark for $1500. This car has no body rust and is in fairly good condition. It also came with extra 71 Buick 455 bigblock. I like this body style a lot more and feel like I got a really good deal. Here was the post https://boise.craigslist.org/cto/5451173362.html . The car is in better condition then it looks. The doors and trunk are shaved and have electric poppers.

Congrats on buying a '66! :occasion14:
Judging by the front fender trim and the lack of rocker panel and wheelwell trim, it might be a Special, not a Skylark. Or is the rocker trim removed? They're basically the same car, just different trim levels.
There are a few 66 owners here too, so stick around!
-
It's a special deluxe. But yes all the trim is removed but in good condition
