HI from Canada. I just a 65 GS (about a month ago). I talked to Loren this Morning He gave me more info in 10 minutes than I found in a mouth. There are very few Skylarks here let alone GS 's. So I have this 65 GS , 2 84 Park Avenues . My son has a 64 Skylark convert.

Hello,
Welcome!
It would be great if you let us know your name and where in CA you are located.
Oh, pictures - pictures are what we all want to see!
Mark
-
Sorry Morrie. I don't think you want to see my Skylark (pretty sad). It needs a lot of work.
-
Sorry (again) Killdeer Sk. Just north of the 49th.

:headbang:
Had a really nice conversation with Morrie today.
Welcome to 65GS.com and pictures are encouraged, no matter condition. In fact, take many and take them often. It will remind you of the challenges you overcome in the process of restoration, rodding or what ever direction our hobby takes you.
Never be afraid to ask a question here. This is a fantastic group that loves to share ideas , experience and whatever is needed to help.
Again Welcome,
Loren

Welcome, Morrie! Good to add to the flock of GS enthusiasts. Wow, I thought we had a short cruising season here in Michigan, but I bet it's even a bit shorter where you live. That GS is a great way to uniquely feed your appetite for classic Buicks!

Do you happen to know if there is such a thing as a Canadian version 65 Skylark / GS?
If not we could probably help you with the US data plate.
Oh by the way welcome to the group.
Milton
-
Morrie, welcome and congratulations on your acqusition of a 65 GS!
-
Milton as fair as I know GS's were only built in the US. I think Loren also said that this morning. This GS was built in California . But a Canada any vehicle built or sold in Canada after 1964(not sure of date)customs Canada has a record of it which includes options . So any car imported into Canada when new there would be a record of it. Unfortunately this car was imported into Canada used. So there is no traceable paper work on it. All I have is the cowl tag numbers , which are vague being where it was built.
-
Morrie,
Fremont car can be decoded just like any other 65 except for options. Depending on what condition the car was in when you got it, sometimes you can locate a piece of paper with the codes handwritten on it.

Mark I wish. Head liner gone, nothing in doors, under back seat, under rear deck cover, nothing in trunk. Car is really tough. I should have walked away , but I like a challenge. It is the only 65 GS I have ever seen. I drove a 69 or 70 Stage 1 in 73 never forgot it. Just like the boss I had.

Oddly enough, while guys around here like pictures of beautifully restored 1965 GS cars, they really get to work when they see a car with "needs." What you are describing is mostly upholstery. What's the condition of the steel? A few pictures could go a long way toward giving the 65 GS masters on this board an idea of where you stand. The greater the number of pictures and the better the quality, the better "the doctors" on this board can give you diagnosis.
So get out your digital camera and snap away! . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/kodak.gif)

Nail Lark, Welcome to the site, the longer you stay the more you'll enjoy it.
I did find two 'production sheets' in my 65 Special. They where stuffed between the inner and outer front fenders by the firewall. They were in very good condition considering they were there almost fifty years.
Best of luck with your project, when you get time post up some picture's, as you have read we all like them. They also may help someone else, often even a mundane picture can answer questions or provide details for someone.
-
I pretty much have it stripped nothing. When I worked for GM 40 ish years ago We would find them any where. And little notes now and then.
-
Welcome to the only nailhead GS site,
This is a smaller bunch of guys that actually know what they are talking about. When do we get to see some shots of the project? Dan

I'm having trouble . Don't how I got them upside down

Morrie,
Body was built 3rd week of May, 65. Originally Turquoise Mist. Black bucket seats. Post the VIN tag if you can, can't be too far off number-wise from mine. Looks fairly solid to me. The rear quarter wheel openings can be remade by using pieces from front fenders.
Thanks for posting pics!
When I click on the pics they open rightside up.
Mark
-
At least they are right side up when viewed enlarged. The KK paint code is for Turquoise - like my car. You might want to look for some quarter panels to fix those drag racer wheel wells. :laughing7: Other than that its just your average project car.
Thanks for the pictures and welcome to 65GS - Home of The Nailhead Gran Sport.
Dan
-
Thanks for sharing the pictures! Mine's a Fremont car too.
-
Trunk floor is gone ,rust under front and back seat. Both quarters bad, rear filler rusted, rear tail panel rusted. Pin holes on roof above front to back braces . Trunk seal channel rusted. Trunk lid rusted. I haven't looked at the mechanical yet .I did see that the master cylinder not good. Radiator no good. But I did start the engine, and put it in gear it did move.
-
Morrie,
All pretty standard needs for a 65, especially a northern car. I pointed one member here to this not long ago, so don't know if it sold, but there is another one of the group here that had a complete rust free rear clip for a 4 door for sale. In California. That would take care of a number of needs for you.
Mark
-
Ah, those pin holes. Mine is full of them too! :crybaby2:
-
Cobra what did you do with them? I have found a 64 skylark I have to go look at it. He says its not bad but? He's selling .
-
My body guy is welding them, then grinding and filling, where they are sort of individual. Where there are several together, he's cutting out sections and welding in sheet metal, then grinding and filling.
Good luck!
-
I would be afraid of warping the roof. I did that on a 71 c10 pickup warped the roof. It took a lot to get it back. I think I have found a bell housing and linkage , Thanks Loren. ON the linkage note has anyone tried nickel instead of brass on the bell crank where the ball usually wears . OH ya got a set of buckets today .
-
I bought a one inch brass ball and center drilled it .625 (5/8) and used it on the shaft. I figured the brass would wear out before any of the hard to find pieces did. Looks like a pretty complete project..it must have been painted a long time ago with those 69 Camaro marker lights. A lot of hard to locate parts are still intact, and that is half the battle. Dan
-
I was going to ask about the marker lites. I didn't think they were right.
-
GM didn't use any until 1968. You should be able to look on the backside of the fender to find the holes for the skylark bird. The quarters had nothing in that spot. The lower rear quarters look pretty good in the pics.
-
Morrie ,
Welcome to 65GS home .
Are you going to put the car back to its original colors ? I love that turquoise color on those cars . Your car probably isn't any worse than mine . I,m putting a whole roof on mine .
So whatever you do don't get discouraged , these guys will help find the parts .
Glad your here
-
I am not sure but the roof from a 64 is the same?
-
Yes, 64 is the same.

Chuck There not many competitions up here but quite a few show and shines . Most of them are 2-4 hours away so it will have to run good.

Running good always puts a smile on your face! Gotta love a good road car.

Yup the holes are there for the larks. The other side is worse. On the passenger side there is a 401 emblem were the lark should be. But today is the first time I looked at the picture of the front end enlarged the Gran Sport emblem WAS there NOT when I got home. Some lucky ditch(road ditch) got a emblem.

Wow, Morrie.....you jumped right into this project! Looks like lots of "fun" ahead. Keep the pictures coming. And I would recommend that you start a thread on your restoration so we can follow along.
Happy Thanksgiving! I know that's a US holiday, but you might not see much of many of us here for a few days.
:cheers2:

Dear Morrie, Mark, John, schlepcar, Chuck, and 1965 Buick fans,
Isn't classic car restoration . . . . fun? :BangHead:
and more pics, is there a better way to add photos?
Well honestly. No. There are ways to organize pictures such that it is a lot nicer to include photos, but the price you pay is complexity. Unless, you have some other need to put up photos on the Internet, just keep posting as many as you can and then move on to another post.
Have a nice end of the week and weekend even if Canada doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving as late as folks in the USofA do . . .
Cheers, Edouard :occasion14:

Hi Morrie,
Agree with Chuck, start a thread in the Restorations & Projects section. You'll have to repost all the pictures.
Some nice pluses on your car; great color, black interior (easiest to do!) and factory manual transmission car. You should also consider entering it into the registry here.
All the 65 rust issues shown in your photos have been repaired on cars by members of the forum. Panels available are all the floors, panel between the back window and deck lid (GTO). You'll have to scrounge quarters, rear panel (tail lights) and top pieces. As John Evenson stated, he his replacing the entire top on 65 GS HT project. If Kurt still has that rear clip....

I was thinking of asking Loren if he could move the pics . If not it take about 20 mins. Ihave been toying with the idea of changing the whole floor. I have a 64 parts car found (Ihave to look) hopefully the quarters are good.
-
Welcome to our little home Nail Lark. Looks like you have a long term project on your hands.
I'm one province to your east in Winnipeg. Used to have two 65 Gran Sports, which I have now sold. Mine were the only two in Winnipeg as far as I knew. My Bamboo Cream car, which Dan (dsags) now owns drew plenty of attention at shows and cruise nights.
I still have some small parts laying around which I will not likely use anytime soon.
As previously stated, the 64 and 65 body shells are virtually identical. If that 64 is solid and cheap enough, grab it for your body needs. I do have a fairly decent 65 hood, but shipping it would be $$$$$$
-
Hi fellow Canuck. There was one in Regina and he sold it nice car From the pics he showed me . It is Dark blue convert. I don't know where it went.I bought some stuff from him. But need lots more. Hopefully the 64 works out.
