Dear Loren and 1965 Buick A-Body hood ornament connoisseurs, . .
Hood ornament on ebay. Not mine
Wow! Certainly in excellent condition for a 50 year old hood ornament. Strangely, the paint on the backside of the ornament is in much worse shape than the front. The car that supplied this ornament didn't get driven all that much to leave a hood ornament like this!
Cheers, Edouard

I've found that the back side is usually more faded then the front.

Hmm, that's also interesting. I only have experience with my trusty wagon's hood ornament and her hood ornament was literally debris blasted. She has over 260,000 miles on her, so that not a surprise. I suppose most of the survivors that can be saved are "barn finds" of one sort or another. Cars that have sat unused for a long period of time will show a different kind of "wear."
Still, it does suggest that Buick applied some sort of extra protection on the front of the hood ornament that wasn't on the back. That would make sense and since I suppose these parts were not expected to last even ten years that was good enough.
Cheers, Edouard

I think the reflection of sun light off the windshield would be a more plausible explanation. The extra time/ effort/ cost to apply an addition protective coating to one side as opposed to the other wouldn't be an economical decision upon Buicks part.
Just some thoughts on the subject,

Hmm, your point does make sense. It was easier to apply whatever coating on both sides. The extra material would have an insignificant incremental cost.
Alas, the sunlight off the windshield seems unlikely. That energy would only be reflected on the hood ornament for a very brief period of time when the angles matched up. I know these things because my trusty wagon has (among other things) hauled telescopes to weird corners of the world:
My telescope is the yellow one. I'm very proud of the design even if . . . I never did get around to finishing it! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/embarrassed_blush.gif)
So if I ever get around to finishing my trusty wagon . . . . I'll still have a few things to do! :laughing7:
That still leaves the fading pattern of 1965 hood ornaments as a mystery. . . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scratch_head.gif)

I did my best, got too rich for my blood however. Was it someone here that blew me out of the box?

We all have a threshold point. :headbang:
Gives me a sense of what they are worth though.

Dear Buick_65, Loren, and mid-60s Buick seekers of hood ornaments, . .
I did my best, got too rich for my blood however. Was it someone here that blew me out of the box?
It wasn't me! Alas, that didn't seem like such a high price for such a rare item in such good condition.
Gives me a sense of what they are worth though.
As a friend reminded me, the hood ornament is basically the "crown jewels" of your car. If you want your car to really shine, the hood ornament has to look good. For a really good quality reproduction, perhaps $200 is still too low.

They seem to be listed in bunches.

Dear Dan and mid-60s Buick caregivers,
They seem to be listed in bunches.
Interesting. I wonder if there are people out there who watch the prices of rare parts like the 1965 hood ornament, and when they see the price that they want to get for that part, they finally put it up on the market. Compared to much older cars, there are many more parts floating around for our mid-60s Buicks. On the other hand, there are many more people trying to restore them as well. So it makes sense that the balance of supply and demand could tip seriously in the favor of the supplier of rare parts. As such, collecting these parts may well be a decent investment in their own right.
Of course that's nothing but bad news for those of us needing these parts.
Oh well, . . . . Edouard

Pretty certain I have an original ornament, base and maybe nut stashed away somewhere. Don't think they're in as nice shape though. :icon_scratch:
