Title: Underdash Tach Install
Post by: Mark Ascher on July 21, 2015, 11:24:28 PM
Does anyone have a factory underdash tach in their car? I have one I'd like to put in,
but can't figure out how it mounts to the dash. The cup has a boss with the two tach wires coming through,
and another boss with a mounting screw. None of that correlates to anything obvious under the dash.
The FSM has a page in the accessory section showing the install, but that part is vague.

Is there a bracket that mounts to the underside of the dash for this? I'll post a few pics.

Mark

I mounted one in my 66 special. I left that boss on the tach and drilled a hole in the dash to feed that and the wires threw. Then I also drilled another hole for the mounting screw. Here's a pic. I'll try to get you a better  pic in the morning.  This is all I have on my phone right now.

Sizzler,
If you send me the drawing for the bracket, I will see if I can get some of them made.  I have never seen one before either --just seen the graphical representation of it in the accessories section of the 64 Chasis service manual.

I'd be in for a bracket too if you decide to make one. Here is another picture I took this morning. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/22/dda74e457bb29940ff6cbce116b765cb.jpg)

That looks Kool ,  I would be in for a bracket also if some can make them .

Was just looking on E bay and noticed there is a Buick tach someone has listed for a under dash application , can someone tell if that is the correct bracket ?   He has a buy it now for 499.95

Dan, Jon, Brian, John,

I would be in for a couple of brackets. Brian, I have a possible resource as well for making them.
The market is minuscule, maybe a handful of us. Let me know if I can help.
Dan, thanks for the pics! I have attached pics of the tach & under dash area where it mounts.
The ashtray is just to the right of the screw.

That is definitely a homeade bracket of some kind on the one on Ebay.   The Tach Mark has still has the correct mounting screw and un-cut wires with the correct connectors on them.  The best pictures of how to install the tach under the dash are in the back of the 65 Chasis service manual.  I will try to remember to scan it one night when I get home and post the picture here.

Brian,

I have that page in the service manual marked, but how it mounts under the dash does not look
clear. It appears there is a bracket, but it doesn't show any detail.

I like the statements in the first page of the accessories section.

Sorry for the delay guys! a friend of mine did get to do a cad drawing of the bracket but I'm going to have to do a little redesign it's got to fit ,work and look right ! Or I will not do it! Does about a dozen or so sound right? Looking at cost they will be made by a machine shop so they will be nice a precise! Thanks Jon :rocker:
