Title: seat belts.
Post by: Robk on May 18, 2015, 12:13:16 PM
Hello,

Anybody have a set of black seat belts they would sell me?  Turns out mine are not correct.   Any help appreciated.

Check out OPGI.  New catalog just came out over the weekend.  They are now reproducing the deluxe seat belts for 65s in black.  They have the ones that are fixed, and also have retractors.   In addition, they have all the buckles, anchors and bolts sold individually for making your own.

Thanks Brian.  I must have reached the wrong person on the phone at OPGI.  I will try again.

I just got the catalog in the mail when I got home Sunday night from being out of town.  Looked through it last night and saw those in there.  Try this:

The link is not to a set of DeLuxe seat belts. The links shows replacement seat belts.

Deluxe belts were an option.  I have come across several 65 GS cars that came with the standard belts.  The ones in the link are what came in the GS standard if you did not order retractors.  The add says replacement, but the ones in the picture look identical to the standard 65 belts.  The new paper catalog shows the deluxe belts if that is what is needed, but could not find them online.

I might have found the deluxe version but it says for 1966 rather than 1965.   Are these correct?  I already have a good retractor so I would only use the buckle side with the red decal.

Rob,

They look correct. You would need someone who can sew the belts. Correct belt have labels sewn to the webbing.

 :dontknow:

Maybe I'm missing something here. The retractors are not like the ones in any of my GS or Skylarks.

Yes Dan , I agree on the buckles. The retractors are like the Buick accessory ones that were for the standard belts.
My first GS had the standard belts. The other four GSs and a couple of Skylarks I've had all had the deluxe belts with the retractor that rolled up into the retractor with the plastic housing.

I have a correct set of retractors.  So if nothing else pans out and I were to buy these it looks like I could combine the two huh?

Dear Rob, Brian, Dan, Loren, and mid-60s Buick perfectionists, . . . .

Check out OPGI.  New catalog just came out over the weekend.

What do ya' mean new catalog!?!?!?! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/question_mark_confused.gif)  Hay, I paid my "taxes" (put in a recent order to OPGI, .  :laughing7: )  Why was my trusty wagon not included in the mailing? (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/sad.gif).  What is this?  You need to have an installed engine in your car to get OPGI catalogs these days?  :icon_scratch:  It's discrimination - I tell ya! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/rant.gif)

(http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/wink.gif) . . . . You guys are - all - wrong!  :laughing7:  The standard seat belts are the ones for the . . . rear seats! (http://)  (That is after I took Biquette's original front seat belts, had them repaired, and had them installed in the rear where my Dad had put generic seat belts . . . . oh about 1973 or so! )

The front seat belts on Biquette are retractable seat belts that suspiciously look like 1968 GM seat belts reproductions from OPGI, but since the car upholstery guy didn't notice, surely you guys won't either . . . . right? . . .  :icon_biggrin:

Seriously, I hate the darn GM logo on the front seat belts.  Hook or crook, I'm going to replace that with a Fisher body logo one way or another.  That GM logo is . . . . so . . . 1968!  :BangHead:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Here is the page from the catalog. Since it was such a hot topic, I bought it to work with me this morning and scanned it.

The belts that Rob linked to in post #6 are very close to 66 deluxe retractors.
My 66 Impala has those.

Is there such a thing as seat belts vs. deluxe seat belts in 65 ? I am thinking that mine were listed as deluxe when I broke down the info, but my buckles look like the chrome handles with the red decal. There is a junk 66 here that has black plastic buckles and I know  both cars are original.

Yes, there were 2 belt styles in 65. Standard & deluxe.
Standard belts had interior color buckles. Deluxe had the chrome buckles.
Deluxe belts also had retractors for the male end of the belt on the front seat.

I have a couple original belts w/ retractors that have a tag sewn into them at the very end ( next to the retractor ) it looks like the date code is on them .  Or isn,t that the date code ?
Unfortunately the date codes don,t match .

Dear Mark, John, and mid-60s Buick fans,

Yes, there were 2 belt styles in 65. Standard & deluxe.

Deluxe belts also had retractors for the male end of the belt on the front seat.

Of course, . . . . that makes sense . . . . :icon_scratch:

That's why our 1965 Deluxe Buick Special had . . . . standard belts . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/shocked_crazy.gif)

I guess I understand that . . . . I suppose . . . I guess . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scratch_head.gif)

However, the universe has finally gotten its balance back.  I finally got my copy of the OPGI catalog.  I'm in Northern California and OPGI is in . . . . Southern California !???!  I know that there has been tensions between Northern and Southern California for a while but withholding classic car parts catalogs . . . that's going a little too far!! Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

I agree....I always thought driving was more important than preparing to crash. Dan

OK, I have the correct seat belts.  Now I need the correct anchors.  I see a couple of different lengths available for the front inner anchors.  Most are 1.25" shoulder bolts.  The ones out of my car are 2" long.  But I'm sure they were added later.  What's correct?  Both for front and back.....

I have Deluxe belts and the anchors on the door sides are straight bolts with gold cad plating that are "hidden" inside the plastic housings of the retractors.  I assume these might be correct?

My parts car had standard front belts without retractors.  The anchors on it are both shoulder bolts, 2" long on the inner belts and 1 1/4" long at the doors.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Here is a photo of some seat belt bolts that I rescued from a 1965 Skylark in a salvage yard. The chrome bolts screw in by the tunnel and the gold cad bolts go at the retractor side by the sill plate.

I can't wait to see your convertible next summer. It's looking sooooo sweet.

John

Dan, what were the ones you sent my that one time? If they are correct and I can find them I can give them to Chuck.

Chuck, believe that Parts Place carries the correct gold cad and chrome seat belt bolts. Not very expensive.

Thanks for the info.  Pictures of what I have are attached.  Both the parts car and the restoration had the longer bolt on the tunnel.  The parts car, with standard belts, had the shorter bolt at the door openings.  The restoration, with Deluxe belts, had the straight gold cad bolts holding the retractors at the doors.  I guess I'll purchase the short shoulder bolts and a pair of the straight bolts as well.  Interesting that AMK offers GM seat belt shoulder bolts in both lengths, but the thread size is 1/2", not 7/16" as all of these are.  I wonder if that's a typo.....

What about anchors for the rear seat belts?  My restoration came with them, but the ends of the belts were simply bolted together and through the floor under the back seat.  Is this right?  I doubt it......

Chuck
