Ok. Here goes. Having restored hundreds of 70-72 GS/larks over the past 45+ years, I was about ready to DIVE INTO A TOTAL RESTO of my newest found project... 65 GS with 53,000 original miles. (as shown below)
Noticed I said "I WAS ABOUT READY TO".??
Good friend Sid Myer BCA, GSCA & AACA judge, & his lovely wife Belva, were at our home for Thanksgiving Dinner. Sid saw this 65 GS and kinda/sorta briefly inspected the ORIGINAL condition, ORIGINAL CARB, ORIGINAL DISTRIBUTOR, ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE, ORIGINAL INTERIOR on & on & on. . . . he suggested NOT RESTORING it right away... but very convincingly, because of its originality, WHY NOT show it in SURVIVOR CLASS at the GS Nationals? especially since 2015 will be the 50 YEAR ANIVERSARY of the BUICK GS!!! SO, thats what im going to attempt to do. :overthetop:
The original carpeting was hacked up by the original owner 'mechanic' just in case the carpet was to get damp/wet, it would NOT rust the floors. GOOD IDEA, eh?
SO parts of the original carpeting are flat out torn up and gone.
This is going to be a REEEAL SERIOUS CHALLENGE for me to remove the interior just to install USED but DECENT BLACK original carpeting... ya know? :violent1: I really want to install new carpeting...however, I am thinking that move would be detremental to the outcome of A SURVIVOR CLASS candidate...
So that being said, I am looking for BLACK, original, generally and typical worn BUT NOT TORN, THIN OR STRINGY... loop carpeting from a 64 or 65, and MAYBE? 66 lark/GS? 2 DOOR OR 4 DOOR... I will make it work.
I KNOW its a C R A Z Y request :tard:...however, ANYONE OUT THERE wanna help me out with this challenge??? :icon_scratch:
ThanX in advance!

Wheelz,
That filthy old carpet might have looked black but white interiors came with gray carpet.
Dan
-
Wellthen, this would be an AH-hhHA moment! This could explain WHY the dash was Grey and not black? (as per pix attached)
Wheelz, Tampa Bay
-
Yeah, that's the correct dash color for a white interior. Good luck with the carpet search.
Dan
-
I would think decent GREY carpeting would be a needle-inna-haystack kinda thang. . So I am still open to a faded BLACK carpet.
ya...it COULD work... :icon_scratch:
Wheelz, Tampa Bay
-
So I am not crazy.....I have to tell someone....I have looked at my dash thinking,Is it faded? Did some goofball paint it gray? So if the dash is supposed to be gray, what about the steering column and wheel? I thought the carpet was black too when I tore it apart. Car was originally white bucket interior. This is interesting because I have never seen gray carpet.
-
White interior car would have had a grey steering wheel & column.
Mark
-
Yes, the steering column is grey, NOT black. The later model black sport wheel is wrong, as is the larger hub and that 66 horn button... I have a correct smaller hub. AND it appears the grey dash and surround is original. Inside the edges of the glovebox and ash tray is also grey...
But it really appears to me, the carpet is black... I'm just say'n. :glasses9:

Here is dealer documentation to show how an interior is to be.
This is from the '65 Buick Features and Facts book. This book is something a salesman would have at his desk as reference.

....AWESOME information Loren! THANQ! :occasion14:
-
Dennis,
You are welcome!
I hope you can find some gray carpet. It's unfortunate that a previous owner made the choice to remove the original.
If not, I think a new gray would be a better choice and an easier explanation. Further it would be more in keeping with the survivor category.
Just some thoughts,
Loren
-
I agree... but it iz whut it iz. Nuttin I can do about it now... I actually have already considered new grey carpeting... but only AFTER I research details about the inz an' outz of that SURVIVOR STATUS...

:dontknow:
Don't know why but Buick for some reason used Gray for carpet, column, dash & door trim with White Interior. Chevy, Olds , Pontiac all used Black with White Interior.
Used to have people all over me about the Gray when I used to do the show circuit, even when I had all the various books with me.
I personally liked the gray better than black because it was a softed transition in color change than white to black.
Can't wait for spring to finish painting dash and column in gray on the hardtop. Carpet already done.
just my 2cents

I may've missed it and dont see this spelled out EXACTLY on the below Sales Sheet provided by Loren, (it does say UPPER instrument panel) but ... would Buick have installed a matching GREY dash PAD?? :dontknow: It appears mine is BLACK...
Wheelz, Tampa Bay
-
Yes, the dash pad is gray.
Loren

I'm looking at a 1965 DuPont color chip chart....
I'm seeing a 'Lt Gray' #9002 semi-gloss used on Buick and Cadillac, and a ''Dark Gray' #9195-LH flat used on Buick only. The dark gray has some texture and is likely the paint used on the thin strip between the windshield and dash pad.
The 'light gray' looks like a medium gray primer color with no metallic. Should there be metallic?
-
The paint Buick used on the dash was a Dark Gray Poly DL32471. When Buick used the term Poly in the description that was the code for metallic. The entire upper dash metal, including the area the dash pad covers, up to the windshield is painted the same dark gray poly. The picture is of the interior of my convertible. The dash pad was spruced up with a coating of SEM 15303 Graphite Flexible Color Coat.
-
NIIIICE! So. Uh. Yo, wheres your OLD carpeting??? hehehe. :icon_biggrin: I have another question.. I am considering polishing the white painted roof. Do the Gran Sport emblems have nuts inside under the sail panels? or are these emblems snapped on with barrell clips? :dontknow:
Wheelz, Tampa Bay
-
They are held on with nuts. The inside trim panels need to be removed to get at them.
Mark
-
ThanQ Mark! :icon_salut: Im happy I didnt try to PRY them off... :BangHead: :crybaby2:

Dsags..you really opened up a can with that interior pic. It has been said that the gray carpet had gray on the console,so in a consolette,is that gray or black. I have seen several colors before, but not in this combination. The car I am restoring is white with 154 white interior, the dash definitely looks gray, but is the four speed console supposed to be gray too?
-
Can honestly say I don't know. Never saw a finished white interior with a consolette. Like how the gray looks so that is what I went with. Believe the automatic consoles all came with a black plastic lower and black accent paint on the upper portion.

Well guys, with Thansgiving holidaze and visitors from the great white north for the past few weeks, I havent had much time to heavily investigate this original 65 GS I picked up just a few weeks ago....however, all this chat about grey this and black that...I am going to thoroughly and closely take a good look at the grey? carpeting in my car... and what color the auto console upper highlighted painted portion really is... you know, stuff like that.
So hang in there.. Pix and details coming soon.

Just to clarify Dans comment on the Automatic Consol Color always being Black.
I think the Automatic Consol was Black on both the Black and White interiors but color matching on the other interiors
I know both my Black HT and Red Convert had Red interiors with Red consol.
My current White HT has White interior and Black console
My Current White interior also has Gray upper and lower dash with Gray metal dash, Gray AC Vents, steering wheel, steering wheel column, carpet, door carpet inserts, seat belt retract covers I think- no sun here today in the workshop, tilt and directional wand plastic nobs.
I'm third owner and have contact with the previous two if need be.
I also found another Gray 4 speed consol that was Gray in the pictures.

Dan
The lower portion of auto consoles were color coordinated with the interior. I have blue, red, black and a goldish colored out in the shop.
All the chrome top areas have the textured area painted black.
Loren

Loren and Milton,
Knew I could count on somebody to REALLY know to about the auto consoles.
GREAT pictures of the white interiors. Very valuable. Would almost kill for the shift boot in the 4 speed car but that should be proof of its originality.
Dan
-
Milt,
I will agree that the manual console could have been gray.
I restored a'65 GS for a guy when I lived in MN.
It was an original car, red hardtop with a white interior, power windows. four speed with console. The console was gray in that car when he got the car.

The gray carpet I just put in was from A.C.C. (American carpet co.), #158 Charcoal. $ was $166.00 +
ship.
It fits like a glove. I think it was listed under Chevell?.
Al
I also have a piece of the orig., and this color is a dead match to it!!

Um, when I researched up ACC, Google Chrome pulls up HOME LINE CARPETING companies... dont see anything for AUTOMOTIVE.. :dontknow:.??
-
ACC= Auto Custom Carpets
http://www.accmats.com/ (http://www.accmats.com/)
Their products are sold by MANY vendors, such as Legendary interiors, Rockauto, Ground Up, etc, etc.
Shop around for the best price, and remember shipping can be expensive. Buying at a local swap meet is a great idea.
A carpet for a Chevelle automatic is same as our GS with auto or 4 speed.
Another good carpet vendor is Trim Parts.

This might be it!.... ACC set in Gunmetal Gray, sold by 1aauto:
http://www.1aauto.com/search?model=149&page=2&q=carpet&year=1965 (http://www.1aauto.com/search?model=149&page=2&q=carpet&year=1965)
$159 with free shipping.
Edit: Rockauto is $120 plus approx $13 shipping. They don't list gray, but I've read they can get other colors, just call and ask.
Don't forget to use the 5% discount code, which you can find with a Google search.
Another Edit: The ACC site shows a Gunmetal Gray #22 and a Charcoal Gray #35. :dontknow:

For accuracy the red interior with plad floor mats I had pictured has a few originality issues.
Aftermarket Radio / Speakers with cropped door panel stainless that I later replaced with correct door panels.
Aftermarket gauges and steering wheel wrap.

OK, gotcha Milt, Thanx for explaining! :occasion14:
WALT... thanx for the links. I am looking at both Gunmental and Charcoal on the ACC site link... The Gunmental looks a little too light so I am thinking Charcoal would be better..... :dontknow:
ANY INPUT from you guys on correctness and/or preferences??? :glasses9:

go with the charcoal, as stated below, I compaired to a sect. I took off a piece from under the sill plate back in 1970 from my red conv. and it is dead on. + ACC's fits like a glove.
Al :cheers2:

ahh, ThanQ Al! Somehow I overlooked your post. CHARCOAL IT IS!!!
-
The gray carpet I just put in was from A.C.C. (American carpet co.), #158 Charcoal.
Al, I don't see a #158 Charcoal on the ACC site.... only a #35 Charcoal .
http://www.accmats.com/Products/Flooring/Material.aspx (http://www.accmats.com/Products/Flooring/Material.aspx)
What vendor did you buy it from? ACC site shows much higher prices.
-
Walt
Bought directly from ACC, it was listed under the Chevelle 2 dr. it possibly was on sale as I also bought the underlayment at the same time.
Will look for the invoice later this week. We have just moved and things are in disarray.
Al
-
You get a better price on the carpet if you buy it through Year-One instead of direct through ACC. I talked to them one time about that and they do it to protect their dealers. They will sell it to you direct, but you are going to pay more for it that way.

This is as good a time as any to make a correction on a post I made a while ago on my white interior 65 GS HT Automatic with white Exterior.
I wouldn't want to keep incorrect information out their for people using the search function.
After the SUN came out my BLACK automatic console turned into a very dark gray.
Cheers
Milton
