Title: '65 GS 4-speed for sale in KC on Craigslist
Post by: nut465gs on July 13, 2014, 11:34:34 AM

Saw this GS in person yesterday. I took a few photos. Definitely a genuine numbers matching 4-speed GS. A 20 foot car. Older paint job. Blistering paint around rear wheels. Did not start as battery was dead. No visible antifreeze in radiator as there is an apparent radiator leak. Needs a total restoration.

Those are pop rivets holding the cowl data plate on....what's with that? Better check the vin tag rivets too.
Neat car tho.

As John posted elsewhere, it's advertised for sale again:

Any of my parts cars that were Flint built had a different type of trim tag if they were built early in the year. This was a January trim tag for an early car, but all of my early ones showed a cursive writing at the bottom of the tag that said " magic lacquer". The GS I am restoring was a fairly late car built in July and it is also a Flint car, but the tag looks more like the one on this car. Does anyone have an early GS from fFlint that has the other style cowl tag. It would be nice to know when the early style was used.

The "Magic Mirror" tags were not Flint cars. Those tags were Fremont only.

John was kind enough to send me a bunch of pictures of this car. It is pretty rough.

Mark,
The tag says Flint,Michigan  spelled out at the top of it. I believe I have two cars with this tag,and it says BF instead of FB.

All the Fremont tags say Flint, Michigan at the top.
If it has the "Magic Mirror" script on the bottom, it's a Fremont build.
No other GM a body plants used that. There are also none of the usual
ACC codes on the Fremont tags. They used their own coding system.

Go here for more info on a body cowl tags:

Click on the accessory codes button and scroll to the bottom.

Thanks Mark,
I realize that you are right because of the BF marking, but I was still wondering about the Flint on the tag. Do you think it means that the body itself was made at the Flint Fischer Body plant? Similar chevelles had the detroit marking on the tag,but they were assembled in Fremont also. A bit confusing, Dan

My conv. was a Flint car, built o2B. Have found several parts with codes 2 10 5, would assume feb. 10 65. It was shipped to my local dealer on Feb. 18, 65.
This is off the orig. shipping invoice. Also no Magic Mirror finish.

Just to clarify after Marks comment, two of these cars that I thought were Flint built are definitely Fremont cars. I have to double check a few things because they both said Flint on the tag,but I think that is the body plant where they were made. The one magic mirror tag says 4S on it,but the car is not a gran sport. They may have used different codes than the other plants,Dan

Regarding Fisher Body; most, if not all, GM assembly plants had a Fisher body plant inside, next to, or some close proximity to assembly. Fremont was no different. The A-body cars built in Fremont had the bodies built there.

And yes, Fremont had a unique coding system for the cowl tags.

Walt,

Good eye to catch those non factory rivets on the trim tag. The engine is numbers matching to the door jamb VIN plate. But now I see that they also do not have the correct Rosette rivets. As always, buyer beware.

Nice to have boots on the ground when looking at a potential purchase.  Thanks to folks like John that will/ can take a look at that far away car.

It doesn't hurt to ask if there is someone that can help out in that way.

Hey John, I found a post on the Pontiac boards that says some 64-65 cars used the round rivets. Wonder if the same may be true for Buick?

Walt,

Very interesting. Learn something new everyday. It appears that the VIN tag was masked off for the repaint and there are signs of "aging" around those rivets. I do think this is a true numbers matching GS, but why remove the firewall trim tag in the first place. Regardless, the car has too many restoration issues to be priced at $15K.

.... but why remove the firewall trim tag in the first place. .....

Could be for a perfectly innocent reason.... to paint the firewall, or 'restore' the finish on the trim tag, etc.
I did the same on my blue '66 way back in the 1980's when I refinished the firewall.... took the tag off, painted the firewall, and reattached the tag with pop rivets. Who knew back then we would now make such a fuss about the 'correctness' of things!
My '65 has surface rust creeping under the trim tag....once upon a time I would have removed the tag to treat the rust. Now I wouldn't dare touch those original rivets!!

I know for a fact the VIN tag in my 64 had round rivets holding it on.  It had never been off when I got the car--could tell by the rust bleeding out from behind it.   I bought it from the original owners and was around the car growing up as a kid (friends of the family).  Most sources say that GM didn't start using the special rivets until 65.  There may have been some transition time there as well, so some early 65's may still have the round rivets.

Brian,

That makes sense as the build date of the GS is the third week in January. It also has the early rectangular grille emblem. As I mentioned earlier, the VIN tag round rivets look aged.

My 65 conv., built 2nd wk. Feb. has the rosetta rivets, also Small  grill emblem. I can guarantee they have never been off. Pa inspection is VERY picke about that.

Wish you could seen what I had to do to Register Mr T's hardtop. Took over 2 months to get a plate, even with all paper work.

I would take a second look at this car if you could verify vin # on trans and on frame rail ! You mite have the real thing ! My Kansas built GS 02B has. Round stainless steel rivets ! All numbers match engine ,trans frame protet-o-plate trim sheet and date codes to! I have parted another gs and have seen half dozen cars. With round rivets! My buddy even,Parted one that had one round and one rosette!
