Title: Wood Steering Wheel & Center Console
Post by: Bamfer on September 06, 2012, 04:22:09 PM
Hi Guys, I might have a 65 Lark ( not a GS ) to buy and will be needing a center console and possible a wood steering wheel. It's an automatic on the column and I would like to put it on the floor. It has bucket seats now. Any one have any advise that has done this or parts. It's a driver so they don't need to be perfect, just nice. Thanks for any info.

Nice looking Lark, the conversion isn't too hard. The center console can be a bit costly though and the column is a little scarce.
Does anyone know if other A body columns will work?

I see you are in Nebraska. I'm south of Lincoln.

Bamfer, I should have a consoel /shifter, and a floor column out of a 66 GS that would work. The wood wheel for a Buick is a one year item, only used in 1968 on the Skylark and GS. You can make it fit a 65 /6 by turning down a 68 hub to fit the 65/6 column. The wood wheel can be purchased after market but the horn cap is not correct for 68 Buick. I have used a interior color three spoke 71/up Buick wheel on these and they look nice. What condition is the stock wheel on this car? Most of them are cracked. I also live in Nebraska, north of Omaha, Thanks Bill.

Wow nice to know you guys are so close! The wheel is cracked so it doesn't look so good. But from the pictures and video I have seen the rest of the car looks pretty good. I am going to pick it up next Friday so I should have it home Sat - Sunday. I'm very excited, I had a 65 lark convertable years ago and it was a very fun car.
I'm REALLY hoping my wife and kids like it and have fun cruising around. I live in Elkhorn so maybe we can meet up some time. And I would be interested in the console/ shifter. I might just do an after market wheel that looks close to factory. The car has the 300 2 bbl so not a Hot Rod but maybe down the road a little I might need something just a bit more peppy. Guess I should just get it home first  :laughing7:

You can always look for the 4v intake and a dual exhaust to wake it up. It's a fairly economical engine as it sits. My experience with the 300 wasn't a bad one at all.
Elkhorn is a lot closer for Bill, but it would definitely be good to meet up sometime.

Good luck with the acquisition ,
Loren

Would be interested in getting the 4 bbl set up, already has dual exhaust. I might be getting ahead of myself though. Still need to get it home first. Is the 4 bbl intake hard to find ?
Thanks

Yes, the 300 4 bbl intakes are rather scarce, they were only made in 1965. The 1964 intake was aluminum and will fit with a few mods, but it does have smaller ports. In 1966, Buick used the 340 for more hp instead of a 4bbl 300.

The later Buick rally steering wheels do have a slightly larger hub. It fits, but looks a bit off. A Corvette hub is the correct size and is available as a repo.

Thanks for all the great info, I would like to see the pictures of the console, shifter, any steering wheels. And I might need the lock for the wing vent. If everything holds I'll be driving it home next weekend.  :blob7:
