Title: 65GS Owner Needs Help
Post by: Mark Ascher on March 10, 2012, 01:15:09 PM
I listed a few of my spare parts on eBay this past week. I was contacted by one gentleman who had his long-owned GS mishandled (best way I can term it) by the body shop doing the work. Now he is in need of a number of parts. This is his mail to me;

 Mark,

Thanks for responding.  I guess you could say I?m a 65GS nut, we have had the car since 78, believe it or not we got it from a little old lady in FL, it had 12K miles on it when we got it in 78, show room new. Anyway, the car was passed to me my senior year in 81 and I promised my grandmother I would restore it someday, well I parked the car in 82 and saved the money to restore it.  Fast forward, I took it to a body shop- 4 years ago, a complete car with all the parts plus extra?s.  Well, long story short, they took my money, and the business folded and I was lucky to get my car back! (bank owned everything)  I got it back in a 1000 pcs (literally) the tub is sitting on the frame, minus a lot of parts, I?m still trying to figure out what they stole, they also ruined a lot of parts as well, taking it apart. They even took my VIN numbers!  Well anyhow I guess it sounds like I should join the 65GS club.  The whole experience has left a sour taste in my mouth, not to mention an empty wallet.  Of course the parts they took were nice parts, since the car was originally from FL, with no rust, A/C, PB,PS. This is what I do know; I know I need the vent ports (I?m currently the high bidder on what you have posted-not sure what your reserve is), all emblems (I?ve got the birds), chrome head light bezels, A/C parts-not sure what they all took?, original antenna, auto shifter (I think I got one that will work), original seat belts, the whole climate control panel/wires/switches (for A/C), center?s for the wheels-birds, wiring for the front of the car, rear lights on bumper, ignition w/ keys,( I believe I got something that will work from a donor car) and who knows what else?  My e-mail to get ahold of me is <email address removed per policy>

Thanks,

Jerry

I have encouraged him to join here so we can give him a hand in getting his 65 back together.

What a sad, sad story. I can't imagine how devastating this must be for Jerry. Hopefully he will join our little clubhouse and get the help that he may need to get his GS back on the road again. If Jerry would let us know what area of the country he lives, there might be someone nearby that can help him inventory what he has and what he needs. This is what this forum is all about. Thanks Mark for bring this situation to light.

If it was me,before I spent another dime on the car I would get the missing vin tag straightened out.Why put your heart and soul and wallet into a car the police may confiscate if he ever gets stopped.Just my .02       Tom

    Tom is right, take care of the VIN/ownership issues first. Go to your DMV dept and have them do a search and fiind out what to do about the missing VIN... the Skylark should be in your name before you do anything else.. I just went thru a search & registration with NYS DMV. It took a long time and a lot of paperwork...

I found this thread on a Camaro forum that addresses a similar issue of a missing VIN tag.

I assume that Jerry has the title which would have the VIN. This VIN should match the VIN that is stamped on the frame in two different locations. The VIN should also be stamped on the engine block. If all these match, it should help to get a reissued VIN tag. Of course, all this depends on the laws of the state where it's registered/titled. Contacting his DVM would be the first step to getting this issue resolved. Best of luck to a fellow "65 GS nut.
