Title: Auto console question.
Post by: sodak65 on December 08, 2014, 09:43:45 AM
I'm thinking about putting a sp st400 in my car until I can get a good five speed.  I have located several trannies and found a nice 67 st300 auto console/shifter setup.I'm not worried about being correct just want to know if the console will fit the same as a 65? Also would there be anyway to make the 2 speed shifter work with a st400?  Thanks.

The 67 console should fit. It has a textured plastic base whereas the 65-66 had smooth plastic.
The 3 speed console (67 GS) uses a much different shifter than 2 speed versions.

You can modify the 2 speed shifter to work by drilling another hole for the upper shift rod and moving the rod closer to the pivot point. This will increase the shifter travel to accommodate the extra 1 and 2 positions.
You'll also have to bend/grind the shifter lever under the floor to make more clearance for the trans housing.

Another option is to convert the shifter to cable operation using a kit from ShiftWorks.

Thanks Walt I did see that conversion but it's for the different 65/66 shifters. I might just have to use an aftermarket cable shifter because I really don't want to cut my floor open for the shifter.

I think the kit will work with the 67 2 speed shifter you have. Bet they didn't list it 100% accurately.  Best to call them and ask.
