Title: Paint Color Questions
Post by: Chris on July 07, 2009, 02:12:16 PM
I'm detailing the engine compartment in the convertible and I'm needing to know the paint colors for the following items under the hood.

The bracket that holds the glass Opti-kleen bottle

Alternator bracket (engine color?)

The two brackets that hold the fuel filter (attach to the thermostat housing)

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,
The bracket for the Opti-kleen bottle was  zinc plated, not the yellow zinc.

alternator bracket:
                             with A/C  : engine color
w/o A/C  : aluminum bracket [lower pivot point] raw finish
w/o A/C  : adjustment bracket[ upper part]  black or engine color
will have to check parts to confirm
fuel filter bracket: have seen white zinc and engine color

Just trying to make her look pretty for BPG..   ;D

She's in the paint shop over the next few weeks getting the door jambs and the underside of the trunk and hood re-shot.

I still need to polish the rocker panels, finish the detail work on the engine, scrub the interior and reinstall the tach before the show.

I'll be there on Saturday!!!

Ok guys.. two more....

Correct color for hood hinges (a picture of a NOS or restored set would help if anyone has one to post)

Correct color of the door hinges - I think these were body color but I want to make sure.

Details... details....   ;)

Loren, I've seen black and engine color on my '66's. It may depend on the assembly plant.
Now for a tougher question....are the bolt heads for the bolts holding the unfinished alum alt bracket also unfinished (or black oxide). Those bolts are longer than the others, so they wouldn't have been painted with the engine...

Hood hinges....grey phosphate on my 66's. Not sure about the springs...maybe black oxide???
Cast iron grey paint is a decent copy of the grey phosphate plating. The phosphate has more sparklies in it tho.

Door hinges and bolt heads are body color. There was NO paint UNDER the hinges on the silver 66 I took apart.

Chris,

I'll post a pic of my hood hinges. I think the springs were grey phos as well.
Walt, I left the two bolts for the aluminum bracket unpainted. They're almost black anyway, and might have black oxide from the factory.

All the steel alt brackets on mine were engine color. Including the one that goes from the bottom of the aluminum bracket to the motor mount.

Almost forgot... the upper alt bracket on my 65 GS was unpainted. i couldn't find a trace of paint on it anywhere. Car was Baltimore built, Aug '65.

So Chris...there are THREE options for you! ;D

Mark, your 65 is Fremont built, correct? My Fremont '66's have engine-color U. Alt brackets as well. The Baltimore 66's have black brackets.
(anxiously awaiting Chris's reply ;D)

Ok guys.. I think I've got it now, thanks!

Springs are painted pink if the car was built on a Tuesday and it was a full moon and the fellow assembling the car was named Steve.  However if Bob was assembling the car on the same night, then they were bright orange.

Just kidding around.. I didn't want to let Walt down.   ;D

Actually this information is very good and I appreciate it a lot.  I think I'll stick with the gray on the springs (I found a really good sparkle grey paint that matches zinc pretty well).

The hood brackets I'll spray the same "factory correct" black that I'm using on the fender wells, core support, air cleaner lid etc...

The door hinges are getting painted body color and I suppose it's up to the guy shooting the jambs wether or not he shoots them in place or off the car.

I'll need to look at the two bracket bolts, it'd look nice to have them contrasting with the other black (nice detail).

This is all great information guys.  Although I'm not trying to build a 100 point car out of the convertible, I do want to try and keep as much of it as close to original as possible when possible.  I thinking that if we answer enough of these questions, a page in the future for just correctly restored components might be beneficial to our members.

Thanks again,

Chris
