Title: 66 GS 4 speed
Post by: GS66 on June 06, 2017, 07:03:02 AM
There's a 66 Gran Sport on eBay today. Might have some of the facts wrong as it states original 340 was removed? Walt, it's out east!

Thanks Jim! Looks like a good one, bet it'll sell fast!

And here's another '66 GS. A very, very nice vert with A/C, priced on the high side at $39k:

Walt could you repost the Vert with air link.  Both links posted are the same, Thanks.

Sorry, fixed!

Looks like a factory 4 speed car. Some nice options present like the consolette, tach, posi, tilt wheel, reveal moldings. And then the dual quad setup, so some nice parts here.

For those interested in the 2x4 setup, I asked about the carburetors.  Answer was the front carb is 3645S AK3, the rear is 3646S AK3.  These appear to be correct for a 64 automatic 2x4 car.  Date codes reflect build in November 1963.  Neither is really appropriate for a 65 or 66 GS from the information I have.

On the positive side though, the main difference in the rear 2-4s carb between 64 and 65/66 is the kickdown setup for the transmission on the throttle arm.  Since the car is a 4-speed, that is a non-issue.  So if someone was looking to buy this car and restore it into a driver, that carb setup will work just fine on that car.  Paint the engine red, put a 66 water crossover, fuel pump, and valve covers on it, and most people would never know the difference (unless they looked at the numbers on the block)

Good points Brian.  We sometimes get ultra anal about restoration and only the "correct" parts will do.  Guilty!.... :BangHead:

I have this same set of carbs being rebuilt by Carmen.  He's also restoring the correct 65 manual carbs that will go on my Verde Howitzer.  The 64 carbs and linkage will be for sale when I receive them.

A great weekend to all!

Anyone know how many 66 GS 340 cars there were? I have only seen one and it had the motor gone, and years ago was going to look at one in central NE. but never made it out to look at it.

None!
I've never seen any Buick literature saying they existed.
There was a 401 340hp option available, 132 built with that option.

Johnny Lightning did make a '66 GS340 but I don't think that counts!

1967 had both a GS340 model and a 'GS ornamentation' option that could be put on a regular Skylark.

That is what I kinda thought but as I said I seen one in a junk yard that looked like a GS but with small block motor mounts, and the one I did not go look at that I was told was a GS with a 340. Both must have been put together cars. So this one is just a Skylark? Anyone look at the frame, it should be a conv frame if it is a real GS.

Right, you couldn't get the 340 until 67, like the GS California. They are not very fast.

You could get a Skylark with a 340 in 66, but it was not a GS.  The 340 was the upgrade form the 2 bbl 300.

The red GS 4 speed car is a real GS.... it has the 44617 VIN which designates a GS hardtop. Skylark would be 44417.
And it's a real 4 speed car, as designated on the cowl tag and the '2L' code.
Who knows where the seller got the 'Original 340 motor changed...' info from! It does have the '67 wheels and caps that I believe were standard on the 67 GS 340. Maybe the car also had the 340 from that 67.

Walt, this car is just up the road from you, would you please buy it and give it the restoration it deserves.

Sure! .... if you are offering me a job to restore it, with health plan coverage and a savings plan??? :icon_biggrin:
Ugh! the realities of working for a living to pay the bills!  Wish I could get paid to restore Buicks all the time!!

It looks like a good candidate, too bad it's red.... I already have a red '66 GS with a 5 speed. If it was blue I'd consider it.
I'm still trying to get back to my silver '66 4spd resto, maybe 1/2 way done. The 65 vert will be after that....

I'm surprised it hasn't sold.... do you guys think it's priced too high? There are a good number of folks watching it.

Here's another 66 GS, just a few miles from me. Nice color combo with A/C.
