Title: Air Filters for Super Wildcat Air Cleaner
Post by: cwmcobra on February 09, 2010, 09:54:50 PM
I was hoping to find a K&N filter for the dual quad setup, but haven't had any success.  I've found a repro on Ebay but would prefer K&N or similar.  Any experience with this?

Thanks,

Chuck

Chuck,

I doubt that K&N would make an air filter for the rare Buick 2x4 air cleaner. I don't know about the one on Ebay either. However, I do know that O'Reilly Auto Parts is the only place that I found that can get the correct fit air filter for the Buick dual quad air cleaner. It must have the extra wide lip at the top. Part number is either #542085 or #42085. It is made with the standard paper element material. Costs about $15.

Thanks John.  Sounds like a better deal than the ebay option.

Just checked with local O'Reillys and they say they can't get them.  I'll check some other stores.

Chuck,

I bought my filter from O'Reilly's about 12 years ago. I checked with the store locally and they no longer have that filter available. All they have is the one for the single four barrel carb. They think that #542085 (#42085) was a WIX number, but I cannot find it listed on their Website as a valid number. I also checked with AutoZone and it's the same story. Nothing. Had I known, I would have bought a number of them twelve years ago. At least you got one from Ebay. Might be the only source left. Have you checked with NAPA?  Good luck.

Check with the Chevy reproduction parts places--I think it is the same filter that fits the 409 Chevy 2-4s and 3-2s air cleaners.

I was looking through Cars.com and came across air filters for V8 with 2x 4bbl,  AF 646 for $24.50.
Good luck.

Dave65,

That's good to know, thanks for doing the research.  As time goes on, parts for our GS will become more difficult to locate.

I just found that Hastings has the correct air filter in their catalog:  http://catalog.hastingsfilter.com/startautoapps.html

And an online seller with a price of $10.41 plus shipping.  This sounds much more reasonable than the Ebay and other specialty filter sales.  Then for snicks and grins I searched on the Wix 42085 part number.  That came up described as obsolete, but available at a price of $8.94 each.  I have ordered two of the Wix filters (personal preference in addition to lowest price).  Shipping is $10.77 and stayed constant as I added additional parts.  So I also ordered two GF94 AC fuel filters at $2.81 each and am hoping that they will be the old design that fits the bracket on the GS.  I'll let you guys know how this works out when I receive the order.

I wasn't familiar with this Internet E-tailer, but am hoping to add them as a favorite.  http://www.bargainautoparts.com

They are located in NJ.

Cheers,

Chuck

Good deal Walt.  Amazon should be a reliable source!

Bargain Auto Parts was no bargain.  They did not have the Wix air filters that I ordered and were going to substitute the generic Hastings fuel filter, which won't fit the mounting bracket with the seam in the middle.  So, I'll be ordering the Hastings air filters from Amazon.  Anybody had any luck finding the old style fuel filters for the non-AC cars?  That's still a dilemma for me.

Thanks,

Chuck

Chuck,

I've been looking for the fuel filters, with no luck. I did pick up an old Fram filter from ebay -
I think the part number was G15.
I can find the Delco number on-line and it has the correct image, but I'm hesitant to order without seeing it first hand. So far, my visits to the local auto parts emporiums, Autozone & O'Reilly, have been unsuccessful. If I find anything, I'll post it here.

Mark,

Same here except I haven't resorted to Ebay yet.  I think I saw the one you bought......

I'll keep looking as well.

Thanks,

Chuck

I know Ames Performance sells reproduction AC GF-61 and GF 98 fuel filters for Pontiacs - in the illustration they have the same configuration for a non-AC car, but have no info on filter body diameters or inlet/outlet sizes either.. has anyone ever tried one?

I bought the Hastings AF26 from Amazon last month.  I see they are out of stock now and selling the item from Hires Automotive for $25 shipped.  Last month Amazon had them in stock and I bought one for $7.85 with free shipping for orders over $25.  Guess I should have bought two.  Timing is everything!  The piece fits fine and looks to be good quality.

Out of ignorance, doesn't the AC Delco air filter, part number A85C, fit the factory 4 bbl air cleaner?

The AF26 filter fits the dual quad engines. The single four barrel is different. :cheers2:

Amazon.......  Timing is everything!

I've gotten some killer deals on Amazon!  :glasses9:My strategy is to: select the item, put it into my cart 'to buy later' and check back often. On several occasions I've gotten items at half price. For example, the K&N air filter E-1910 (4 bbl GS) regularly sells for over $60. Price started dropping over a few days, and when it hit $30, I bought it. Within an hour the price was back up to $60.  :icon_biggrin:

This is a very old thread, but thought I would ask a question anyway:  Is the Hastings AF26 air filter  element for the 65 GS single quad, or for the 65 GS dual quad?

The AF26 is for the 2x4.
$23.16 on Amazon..... Amazon tells me I bought one in 2010, what a memory!

I found this crossover made it into a table and thought I would add for folks trying to find a 2x4 air filter.
