Title: Trunk Spatter Paint
Post by: cwmcobra on February 20, 2016, 06:36:06 AM
Does the spatter paint in the trunk go all the way to the back of the trunk?  Up over the axle tunnel and on to the back seat frame and covering all of the rear wheel housings?  Essentially, the entire trunk?  Other GM brands were done differently, so I'd like to confirm what's right for a Buick.

Thanks,

Chuck

My convertible was all gray spatter even up to the rear seat back, but my post skylark almost looks like it never was anything but blue. Anybody else saw that? Any ragtop I have seen is spatter on quarters, wheel houses, and complete trunk floor. Dan

It's going to vary from car-to-car.... Keep in mind, the painting was done by an assembly line worker that only had 'x' amount of time to get the job done. Sometimes everything was sprayed, other times he missed a few strokes.

Trunk paint was sprayed after the outside paint was done. I believe the taillights and trunk lock latch were were already installed at the time the trunk paint was sprayed. Unsure if the wiring was in place, I'll let others answer....

I did see some nice pics (somewhere here) of a low mile '65 showing trunk paint close ups.

I have a few original trunk/ tail light harnesses here.  No sign of spatter paint on them that I can see.

Also haven't seen any on the tail light housings.

FWIW,

Since there seems to be no consistent pattern to this, I'm going to recreate the pattern from the trunk in Steve Shuman's convertible in my restoration.  I'm pretty sure that the trunk paint in his car is original, so I'm going to go with this pattern.  Pictures attached; I hope this looks consistent with what others have seen in their convertibles.

Walt,

I still have those pics. It was a 19,000 original mile 4 door. I also have pics of Bill Lahner's 65 trunk, original 50,000 mile car.
If those are are the ones you had in mind.

As I think about this, it surprises me that there is body color paint in the trunk up around the rear wheel housings and the back of the rear seat support.  Maybe just on the convertibles since the painters had access to that area?  I don't believe these cars were dipped in paint.....   :icon_scratch:

Could you get a couple pictures showing the tail light areas and how the splatter paint blends around the trunk latch support brace?
Tks.
