Title: interior primer color ?
Post by: 35chevcoupe on August 21, 2016, 05:29:03 PM
I,m trying to gain and log as much detail as I can before body goes to media blast . I have noticed some differences on the color primer used on the body tubs here .
I have cleaned out the body as best as possible and it appears like the primer looks like a dark grey with green overspray about 12 to 14 inches in . This car was built in the Kansas plant .
Any opinions on this ?

I'm fairly certain we've reached a consensus red oxide pmimer was used with LOTS of overspray (of body color).

I actually had a hard time matching the red primer. The Dupont epoxy is expensive and too red.
Next time  I'm just going to use grey epoxy and overcoat it with Rustoleum red oxide to make it look right.

Some panels inside the trunk had black/primer/paint on my '66's.

Hi John,

My car had red oxide primer, but it wasn't super visible in all areas.  After pulling up the carpets and sound deadener, most of the floor was kind of a gray color.  But there are spots where the red oxide was evident.  A couple of pictures are attached.  It was built in Flint.

My restorer painted it with a red oxide primer that he has used for years on GM A-bodies, primarily Pontiacs.  Check out reply #169 in my project thread http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=2075.165 (http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=2075.165)

Cheers!

Chuck

Walt , Chuck , took a few photos of the inside of my car also .    This car has the same reddish color in spots also but there is a greyish color underneath the reddish color because I can scrap of the red and there is grey underneath it .
Also noticed that on the inside quarter where the rear arm rest panels go it has a lot of black over spray , is that because it has a black interior ?
I don,t want to get too technical , I,m sure you guys know these cars way better than I do .

The red I see in your pics looks like the spray glue they used in the interior for attaching sound insulation and soft trim.
It does look like you have grey primer on your car! You can look under the black tar-like sealer that is on the seams to be sure.
Yes, the black is interior paint.

Walt ,
I think you are correct , the red stuff showing does not seem very hard like primer would .
When I scraped off some of the black under coating all I see is more grey .
At least I have some photos to go by for now .
