Got here about noon. Spent some time under a car [not mine] still won't start.

Went over to the host hotel, got Dan's car inside in the registration area. Also got the displays set up next to Dan's car. Then met with some BCA folks about 65GS.com becoming a division. This will help keep the registry going and bring both the registry and site some more exposure.

More interest + more participation = more GS knowledge to share.

Many thanks to all who have sent their BCA  number and name to me to help in this effort.

A small group of '65 GS folks met for dinner and we also had a '66 owner in attendance.

Been a long  but crazy fun day,

  Loren

Rob & I made Des Moines 3 am. Trouble with tow vehicle. Driving along and no power, eventually engine dies. Gassed up in northern Iowa before this started. Truck Did this 4 times.

Bad gas? Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Other?

Got here about noon. Spent some time under a car [not mine] still won't start.

It was my car he was under. Was cruising down the highway enjoying the early morning sun (got over 90 later in the day) when all of a sudden - silence. The engine just turned off. Thought it was out of gas as the gauge read about 1/8th tank - nope, that wasn't it. The engine would spin nicely but not a hint of spark. Had it flat bedded to the hotel. Found a wire on the starter had either fried or just broken loose so we jacked up the car and fixed that (thank goodness for mini starters) but still no spark. The car was scheduled to be on display in the hospitality room at 3:30 so we pushed it into Loren's trailer (I steered so thanks to Roxy, Becky, Loren and John Egel) and headed to the host hotel. There we rounded up some more 'volunteers' (thanks to Al Jones and Roger Sears) and pushed it into the hotel with me steering (notice a pattern here ?).

Will head over today and clean up the car and take pictures of the display, etc then continue to work on the car - it will leave under its own power !

Ah, the challenges of 50 year old cars.

THANKS LOREN !!!

Dan

Hopefully things go a little better tomorrow for you guys.....Reminds me of my last purchase. I flew into Florida to pick up a firebird only to find I had just purchased a dead horse. My wife and I are standing in the parking lot of a retirement home where my firebird had apparently been sitting several months. Of course it is 90 degrees and we are on foot from our taxi from the airport with luggage in hand. After towing this bird to a pep boys and working on it all day long in their parking lot, I had to laugh a bit. I have owned a lot of old cars and this was one of the best of tall tales I ever bought into. The lady that sold me the car from pictures and stories was 65 years old and I bet she is still laughing. Just don't say"at least it isn't raining" out loud........good luck. If that tow vehicle has fuel pressure, check the cam sensor in the distributor.

Finally some good news. Mark and Rob made it to the show and have their cars unloaded. Dan has power to the coil. Will try starting tomorrow.

Dan's car in the hospitality room. Changed the points and condenser plus the voltage regulator. Then re-wrapped the engine wiring harness to repair some melted electrical tape.

Mark, thanks for those pictures. Got word yesterday that a couple of 'iffy' 65 GS's will be here today so believe that 15 or 16 will be the count. Fantastic !

The pictures here are of Loren's handiwork. He put a lot of effort into the displays seen in my previous post. They are very educational about the 65 GS and are a great promotion for the 65GS.com site. Thanks for all that effort Loren !!!

When you open the photos they do come up in portrait so they can be read.

Very nice displays , Loren did a nice job .
I really like the color on Dans conv.   I see a few familiar faces in those pictures ...
Thanks for the photos guys .

I really hope I can make it to one of these shows someday .
It would be cool to have a photo of each one of the 65 GS Guys and Gals in front of there own car as single photos , and then have as many as possible parked really close to each other in like a half circle and then have the owners all standing in front of there cars for a group photo .
Oh well someday it might happen .
You all have down there and drive safe.

That would be a good move. The Walmart is next door to the Ramada Hotel which is where the car show is. Saturday is judging so most people will be there early.

Have a safe drive.

Having trouble getting pictures to upload. Not sure if it is a site issue or mine. If others are having this problem that would be why there is a lack of pictures.

Dan

I too was having trouble uploading pictures, but then you knew that. LOL
Just got home and need to check file size maybe.

Oh... if my count is correct, there were 11 awards given out of the seventeen '65 GSs in attendance.
And not all the GSs that were in attendance participated in being judged.
It was a fantastic event no matter how you participated, show, display only or just be in attendance.

All I can say is WOW!!!! and CONGRATULATIONS to all.

A few more photos taken just before the judging. Some got there early to dry their GSs from the rain the night before. Some got help drying from others just before judging. Some still installing things like the trunk lining. Some sleep in late, but got it ready before the judges showed.

"Some got there early to dry their GSs from the rain the night before. Some got help drying from others just before judging. Some still installing things like the trunk lining."

We had a great time helping one another out. Really

There was more then a trunk lining being put in.... I'm thinking that there should be an award for the most restoration work done on a show field. LOL
Even at that, Rob earned a Gold, new Senior award. Fantastic!!! Congratulations Rob!    :cheers2:

I don't know if any of you guys have talked to Mark since yesterday morning or not, but I talked to him late last night and he got stuck in Osceloa, Iowa with truck problems.  Diagnosis there by a mechanic familiar with those trucks is classic symptoms of a failing fuel pump.  He is having it changed out this morning and hopefully he will be on the road home later today.

Yes, it was an amazing turnout.
To have everything from, in progress to Show stopper, made it really cool.

Where do you start or stop?  Rodgers beautiful mild custom... I really like that one .

Then there is Jay's gorgeous black on black on black convertible. Fantastic car every time I see it.

And how about the mostly original cars that showed up. That was a real treat in itself.

I also don't want to overlook David's car. He should be an inspiration to many of us. You don't need to have a show queen to be part of this. Get out there with the cars and the people, ENJOY!  That's what it is really about for me.

I want to again thank everyone for their efforts to make this a big success.  THANKS!

Hello Gents.  I apologize for the lateness of this message as I left Springfield and went into prepping for and appearing at a 3 day arbitration that just ended.  So I went from one scramble to another.

Loren is right.  Things got a little close at crunch time for me to get ready to be judged.   I planned on final touches and cleaning on Wednesday only to find that a dent in my oil pan made my car sound like I had thrown a rod on initial start-up.  That blew Wednesday for me and I was lucky to get it fixed in time to pile my uninstalled parts and cleanings materials into the trailer and hit the road Wednesday Night with Mark in front of me in John's rig.

So I showed up in Springfield not nearly ready for judging.  Here's where the incredible generosity and class of the members of this board come in.  In addition to Mark A. who really carried me on his back for the past several weeks, I could not have pulled this off without the help of Loren and Brian and Mark on the taillights, a whole bunch of things from Jon T on Friday like cutting the dust flaps, help with the interior, etc. and perhaps mostly from Dan A. who literally helped me get the trunk liner set up, the sill plates in, the dust flaps in and several other finishing touches done about 20 minutes before judging was to start.  As with Mark, ... Dan, I could not have done it without you.   The final push came from John E. after I ran out of gas and was just sitting there waiting for the judges to show up.  Despite having two cars  to be judged he got me on my feet and polished right along side of me to put a bit of a shine on the old girl.   You guys really are the best.

Now all I have to do is tune up a few things like door panels, new dust covers, and door locks, and chrome install and I might actually get the car in good enough shape to actually deserve this award.

Thanks to you all.   :cheers2:
Rob

Both you and your car deserve that award.

I whole heartedly agree, we have a fantastic group of folks that just want to see another '65 Gran Sport on the road again.

Now it's time to plan for next years nationals in Allentown, PA.  LOL
