Title: Driveshaft
Post by: cwmcobra on March 11, 2016, 05:23:15 PM
Another paint question.  My driveshaft looks to me like it was not painted, just raw metal with surface rust.  Should it be painted?  I see that Dan's convertible has a black driveshaft.  Getting it blasted in the next couple of days and need to confirm my approach to finishing.

Chuck,

To the best of my knowledge, no GM driveshafts were painted in that era. Bare metal look is the norm.

Thanks Mark.  That matches with the Pontiac info from my painter.  Bare it is.  With appropriate stripes, of course!

Oh no. Another deduction ! LOL

Mark is correct, as usual. Would paint it though in that 'bare metal' color.

And mine doesn't have stripes either.   :crybaby2:

Here's what I found on my driveshaft.  Surface rusty, so confirms bare metal originally.  There are vestiges of two stripes side by side, but color is illegible.  See pictures below.  They just look to be a different rust color than the rest of the shaft.  The tape measure shows location from the transition where the shaft necks down at the rear.  The width of each stripe is about 5/8" and they are VERY close together.  Not sure how they did that on the line, but that's what I'll try to duplicate.
