Title: Torn down and headed to the machine shop
Post by: Brian on September 08, 2014, 07:14:26 AM
I put the original 401 out of my GS on the engine stand and tore it down a couple weeks ago.  On Saturday I loaded the necessary parts into the truck to haul to the machine shop for cleaning/sizing so I can order the required rebuild parts.  It was in amazingly good condition when I tore it down. All the main and rod bearings still had the coating on them with no copper showing anywhere.  Engine was original and had never been apart before.  Only worn item in it was the cam--one of the lobes was badly worn.  Funny thing is an old hot rodder told me it had a worn cam back years ago when I first got the car and got it running.  It had a little pop to it at the top end if I nailed the pedal to the floor sitting in the driveway in neutral.   He was right on!  I never thought much of the pop, but he picked up on it right away.
