Title: Correct replacement gas tank for 66 GS, non AC
Post by: gs spoken here on December 01, 2016, 01:27:58 PM
Looking for correct reproduction gas tank for my 66 GS, hardtop, 4 speed. It has one vent line on the front pass side. Rock Auto shows a Spectra GM37A, with one vent that appears to be in the correct location, but picture may not be that tank. It also does not have a neck. Wondering if anyone makes the correct one with a neck. Thanks in advance, Bill.

Bill I used the GM37 tank in my Special but I used the GM37JFI with the elect fuel pump for fuel injection. I believe the GM37B will fit, it comes with the filler neck. Amazon has the tank with straps and sending unit for $220.00 and free shipping.

 https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Premium-GM37B-Chevrolet-Chevelle/dp/B000ROO3C0/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Chevrolet%7C47&Model=Chevelle%7C21448&Year=1965%7C1965&ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&vehicleId=5&vehicleType=automotive (https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Premium-GM37B-Chevrolet-Chevelle/dp/B000ROO3C0/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Chevrolet%7C47&Model=Chevelle%7C21448&Year=1965%7C1965&ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&vehicleId=5&vehicleType=automotive)

I would buy from Amazon just for the return policy. The first tank I received from Auto Zone came with the wrong filler neck and had to be returned.

Bill,

If the tanks for 65 and 66 are the same, I've just installed a Spectra GM37J in my 65 GS restoration.  It includes the filler neck, fits perfectly and appears to be quality construction.  Bought it online from Advance Auto Parts in February when they had a 20-25% discount going.  At present, they offer a 10% discount with free shipping with a discounted price of $146.  I also bought the Spectra fuel gauge sending unit FG88E from them.

Happy shopping!

The Spectra website shows the correct tank for the 66-67 is GM37A.
The GM37J is listed for the 64-65. I don't know if they are interchangable.

http://www.spectrapremium.com/products/fuel_tank.html (http://www.spectrapremium.com/products/fuel_tank.html)

If you  are buying from Advance Auto, make sure you sign in as a Speedperks member and use either the TRT30 or TRT41 discount code for 30 or 40% off!!
The 64-65 GM37J tank is only $113.39......with free shipping!!
Unfortunately,  the 66-67 GM37A tank is $340 with the discount.  :dontknow: It's $167/ $203 from Rockauto/Amazon.

Thanks everyone for the input. looking at the 65 and 66 reproduction tanks, the tanks look the same, but the 66 has no neck. This makes me wonder if the 66 neck is different than the 65. I have a used 66 tank and I made a trip to Loren's, for other reasons and he gave me a new reproduction 65 tank to compare to my 66. I will do this and post some info and some pictures, thanks Bill.

Bill, my experience with the 65 verses 66 is that the filler necks are the difference in the tanks! Got a 66 parts car with a brand new tank in it once and all we had to do is have the filler neck changed to a 65! Worked perfect! Very hard to find someone to sweat in a new filler neck though!

On a new tank, it is not an issue.  Been there ... done that.

On a used tank, well that can be a different story. lol

Loren , I,ve welded on new and used tanks  .  They say the key is to keep the tank full so theres no air left in them .

I used to know a guy that wasn't afraid to weld a  full tank.  He also would pipe exhaust fumes into them.   :dontknow:

Picture compare of 65 and 66 fuel tanks.
Size the same.
Bottom of the tanks the same
Top of tanks, some slight stamping difference.
Vent, same location and size
Filler neck, 65 is 1 inch longer and maybe slightly different angle.

Looks like I will need to purchase the GM37A and solder the neck in it from my old tank.

Thanks for the pics Bill.

Best price I see for the '66 tank, Spectra GM37A is $148 shipped from Tamraz:

As I mentioned earlier, the '65 tank Spectra GM37J is $113 shipped from Advance Auto using the TRT30 discount code.
