Title: 4 Speed Bellhousing Boot
Post by: Mark Ascher on October 21, 2008, 08:29:11 PM
Here are pics of the 3 and 4 speed bellhousing boot. Discussions have been started on revisiting the possible reproduction of these. I'd really like to find one good complete boot to use. Mine is marginal.

I remember some discussions on this-
a couple nights ago I was thinking about
repopping this again.  I'll have to contact
my local rubber guy.

Hey, I talked to Frank Mcintyre today and I'm sending him the
boot that I've got (torn up but whole) to see what it
would cost to make.    Patience.

I have one that could be used as a donor, but has a couple of split areas that need repairing.
I'm going to post on the V8 thread.

Ted,

Maybe we should also see if he is interested in reproducing the 4-speed boot for the '65 GS with consolete.  The ones that are available now have a rectangular hole for the Hurst shifter.  Need one with a round hole.

Is this the same Frank that reproduced the '65 Steering wheel?

I talked to Doug Dougherty this week. I'm sending him my boot, and he's going to get the ball rolling on getting these reproduced. Hopefully with a little help from everyone here, we can make this happen!

My car has been riding around without a boot ever since I finished restoring it, so I definitely need at least one for the car, and one for a spare.
Isn't this boot the same as on the Wildcat/Lesabre cars with a manual transmission and the nailhead engine?  If so, may want to advertise it on V8Buick.com for those guys too.

Here are pics of each of each side of the boot. I have nothing to compare it to, so if anyone has an original that they can take a pic of and post, that would be great.
A big THANKS! to Doug at the Buick Farm for seeing this project through.

Please leave comments/feedback/etc.

Mark, it looks good, most important thing is that it works well and keeps the dirt out and the grease in! I will try and take a pic of my original! Jon

I will be glad to do a fit check and "field test" on that prototype if you want to send it to me.  I have to pull the trans and replace the noisy clutch release bearing before the end of March, so I will be under there anyway.

Any progress on the consolette boot?

I'm still in for 3 of the bellhousing boots (as I posted on V8)

My 66 GS buddy, Jimmy, is pursuing repo's of the upper console boot, and the non-console boot he won on eBay last week.  I believe he signed up here recently , maybe he'll post...

I installed my boot last night, but was quickly dis-heartened when I found that it isn't going to work on my car.  The boot fits perfect and they did a great job reproducing it, but if your car has 2.5" exhaust on it like mine, there is no way to position the boot on the Z-bar so that it doesn't touch the exhaust pipe running under the Z-bar.  I am going to have to take it back off and keep it on the shelft because it will just get melted/burned the first time I drive the car.

Brian,
I am very sorry to hear the Boot will not work on your car due to the Exhaust! It is almost hard to believe that adding a 1/4" more exhaust would make it that tight compared to the Stock Exhaust. Was your Exhaust a custom made or an aftermarket type?
Being its that close to the Crosshaft I might also worry about any Lubricant on the Ball & Socket melting off with the heat also.

I had the pipes custom bent, but we used an original for a pattern, so they are stock other than the pipe diameter.   I am going to try putting a zip-tie around the boot to cinch it up some on the lower end next to the pipe and see if that give me enough clearance.  I will try that tomorrow night and let everyone know what the results were.  I will also try and get some pics of it.
It is really close even with the factory pipes--that is why the originals are always really hard from the heat.
I also have a centerforce clutch in my car, which may cause the released position of the Z-bar to be a little further down than a stock pressure plate would be.
Anyway, I was very pleased with the boot and it fits the Zbar well !   Also was very pleased with the other parts I got from you Doug!
